Service history

The Hard Luck participated in the Second Battle of Tiamat as flagship of the Free Planets Star Fleet. Its pennant number was the same as that of the Santa Isabel, the flagship of Lin Pao at the Battle of Dagon 105 years earlier.

In the final stages of the battle, the Hard Luck proceeded onto the main battlefield escorted by 3 standard Alliance cruisers and 6 standard Alliance destroyers. By this point all organised Imperial resistance had collapsed, though individual isolated Imperial ships still fought back. In response to such attacks, the cruisers escorting the Hard Luck moved to intercept and separated from the flagship. In that instance, a stray shot struck the midsection of the flagship, just under the bridge. The initial explosion killed or wounded much of the bridge crew, except Bruce Ashbey. However shrapnel from a secondary explosion mortally wounded him. The final fate of the Hard Luck is not known but it may have been decomissioned following Bruce Ashbey's death. Design

The Hard Luck, like other Alliance flagships of the era, had a single very large engine section. Its engine section and midsection showed some similarities to the standard Alliance cruiser. It had wedge shaped projections on its dorsal and ventral forward hull similar to the Bridget. Additional armor plating protected both sides of its front hull section, though a central gap in some of the plating left a strip of exposed machinery. This may have been for heat radiation, ease of maintenance access, or perhaps to allow for sensors to receive information. Its prow and weapon section and the sides of its midsection showed some similarities to later designs like the Hyperion and Masasoite, suggesting that it may have been a predecessor of those designs.
