Nicholas Boltik (Japanese: ニコラス・ボルテック) was a Fezzani diplomat and politician who served as the governor-general of Fezzan under the New Galactic Empire. Before that he had been the last Fezzani High Commissioner to the Galactic Empire and the personal secretary of Landesherr Adrian Rubinsky, until he chose to collaborate with Imperial dictator Reinhard von Lohengramm in his plan to unite the galaxy under his rule. As the ambassador on Odin he oversaw the operation to kidnap the young emperor Erwin Josef II and smuggle him to the Free Planets Alliance, which was conceived by Rubinsky to keep the two countries perpetually at war, but during that process Boltik made a deal to secretly help Reinhard von Lohengramm.

Political career

As of 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE) Boltik was the secretary of Adrian Rubinsky, the Landesherr of Fezzan. During this he reported to Rubinsky on different developments in galactic politics, including the Battle of Astarte, the rise of Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li, and the internal conflicts in the Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. Around September-October 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE), Boltik was assigned to the Fezzani High Commission in the Galactic Empire by Rubinsky as the new ambassador. In his capacity as Fezzan's high commissioner on Odin, Boltik played the main role in organising the kidnapping of the child emperor Erwin Josef II in the summer of 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE) and smuggling him to the Alliance via Fezzan, as part of Rubinsky's plan. Boltik worked with Alfred von Landsberg and Leopold Schumacher, two veterans of the recent Imperial civil war and loyalists of the deposed Goldenbaum Dynasty, who carried out the kidnapping. Boltik also arranged for a smuggler to take them to the Alliance along with the young emperor, where they would form a government-in-exile. During the execution of the kidnapping plan, Boltik was summoned by then-Imperial prime minister Reinhard von Lohengramm, who had deduced the essence of what Rubinsky and the Fezzanis intended. After Reinhard made that clear, Boltik then explained that it was Fezzan's intention to help him conquer the universe by having the kidnapped kaiser form a government-in-exile with some exiled high nobles in the Alliance for the goal of overthrowing Reinhard. The existence of a Goldenbaum exiled government in the Alliance would give him a legitimate pretext for invading them. Reinhard then asked for terms for the Imperial Fleet's military passage through the Fezzan Corridor during the invasion. Boltik was taken aback, as it was not part of Rubinsky's plan to allow the Empire access to the Fezzan Corridor. Reinhard then correctly stated that Fezzan's intention was to have the Empire and Alliance bleed each other out by fighting in the Iserlohn Corridor. (LOGH: 'Thunder', 'The Abduction of the Young Emperor', 'The Arrow Is Released')

Ultimately, Boltik betrayed Rubinsky, giving Reinhard the navigation data they required to launch a blitzkrieg assault on Fezzan. After they took control of the Fezzan Corridor, bypassing Iserlohn Fortress, the Empire successfully invaded the Alliance. Rubinsky had no idea that Boltik had betrayed them, while his son and new secretary Rupert Kesserling did have a suspicion that it was Boltik who had been played by Reinhard. But neither of them realised the extent of his betrayal or Reinhard's plan until it was too late. After the Imperial annexation of Fezzan in December 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE) Boltik was allowed to become interim governor of the planet, as they agreed. Reinhard decided to allow it temporarily, expecting Boltik to eventually lose control over the Fezzani population's expected resistance and using that as an excuse to place Fezzan under his direct rule. (LOGH: 'Operation: Ragnarök', 'Fezzan Occupied')

Boltik managed to remain as governor-general for about a year and a half, but was later falsely accused of having organised a bombing attack that killed another Imperial official, Minister of Industry Bruno von Silberberch. This was done by Reinhard's chief of secret police, Heydrich Lang, after being convinced to do it by Rubinsky, who was in hiding since the Empire's annexation. The Fezzani governor-general was taken into custody by the Internal Security Department in July 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE). He was later poisoned while in prison and died. In reality, Boltik was innocent, and the knowledge that Lang had murdered an innocent man was used by Rubinsky as blackmail. An investigation by Admiral Ulrich Kesler of the Imperial Military Police later discovered this and Lang was sentenced to death for his role in Boltik's murder.
