Service history

A former Alliance battleship, the Masasoite was first observed at the Battle of the Corridor in 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE), leading Vice Admiral Attemborough's successful attempt to draw the Black Lancers and the Fahrenheit Fleet into the Iserlohn Corridor before Kaiser Reinhard's main force could arrive. It was continuously engaged throughout the battle. (LOGH: 'The Battle of the Corridor: The Invincible and the Undefeated', 'The Battle of the Corridor: Kaleidoscope', 'The Battle of the Corridor: End of the Campaign')

Following the assassination of Fleet Admiral Yang Wen-li and the end of the El Facil Revolutionary Government, the Masasoite became part of the Iserlohn Republic Forces. Though Attemborough remained with Julian Mintz on the flagship Ulysses for the Eleventh Battle of Iserlohn in 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE), he again took the Masasoite as his flagship for the Battle of Shiva later that year, though in the midst of the battle he transferred his flag to the Ulysses to take Julian Mintz's place in overall command of the fleet. (LOGH: 'A Challenge to Arms', 'The Crimson Star Road', 'The Beautiful Maiden Wants Blood')

Design

Amongst the known flagships of the Alliance, the Masasoite is rare in that its design more closely resembles that of the Hyperion as opposed to the more common general design of flagships such as the Patoroklos and Rio Grande.

Background information

Masasoite is a mistranslation of Massasoit, a name attributed to Ousamequin, leader of the Wampanoag Confederacy during the early English colonisation of North America. The word itself means great chief.

Like the Hyperion, the Masasoite is from the generation of flagships preceding the Ajax class. (DVD Features)

The Masasoite was constructed during the 770s and like other ships of this class, was relegated to commanding a border system security squadron after the introduction of the Ajax class flagships.

A minimal modernisation was done after its recommissioning as a fleet flagship, mainly involving fitting of new FTL antennas and command and control facilities.

After the development of fighter mounted laser fusion missiles, new flagships had fighter facilities incorporated into their design. Older flagships like the Masasoite had fighter facilities added in refits. As of 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), Masasoite carried 24 fighters in facilities along the sides of the hull.

At the time of its construction, Masasoite had two "anchors" for mooring it directly to low-gravity celestial objects for when no docking facilities were available. These were removed in a refit in 779 UC (470 IC / 3579 CE) due to increasingly widespread docking facilities.

Bussard ram fuel scoop systems were carried to increase cruising endurance and range, particularly when in remote star systems. These remained in place due to the time needed for such a major refit. (Fleet File Collection Vol.11)
