The Alliance carrier (Japanese: 宇宙母艦) was a type of vessel designed as a mothership and was the primary carrier of the Free Planets Star Fleet. Its main function was the operation of massed squadrons of Spartanian fighters. As of 788 UC, the Lazarus-class was the standard carrier class.

Design
Alliance carriers had a half open hangar design with fighters mounted under the lower hull of the ship. When deployed, the fighters were launched from these hangars into combat. Although their fighter deployment was faster, these carriers were vulnerable to attacks from below as their lower hull remained unarmoured due to the space required for carry Spartanian fighters into combat. Their lack of protection measures also rendered them more vulnerable to enemy fire. This was demonstrated during the Fourth Battle of Tiamat and the Battle of Rantemario which showed numerous Alliance carriers being gutted easily by heavy barrage from Imperial vessels in combat.

Alliance carrier history first started in the summer of 750 UC (441 IC / 3550 CE) with the completion of the then new Washington class carrier. It had a fighter capacity of only 12 fighters. Then Chief Commander of the Star Fleet, Admiral Jamuna, formed carrier strike forces with six carriers to a force, and attacked an Imperial fleet staging point with great success, establishing the fighter force as an important arm of the military. Since that time, carrier capacities and fighter performance characteristics have increased.
The Ameretat is named as an example of the Lazarus class carrier, which suggests the Lazarus is the main Alliance carrier class given how there are no other observed visibly different Alliance carriers. (Data Book: Mechanic & Seiyū Encyclopaedia, p. 141)
