==Ship italics== Hi, sorry if i'm spamming you but i wanted to answer your Masasoite question and i was afraid that i might do some work later today and you'd miss it. The titles are automatically made italic by the vessel infobox template, so any page that you add that to will be effected. (You can disable it, on Valkyrie/Spartanian articles for example, by adding a line that says 'disable-italics = yes'.) You won't be able to see the italics when you're editing or previewing the page though. It will only show up after it's saved. It may just be me being completely absurd and asking too much, so if that's the case just ignore me, but: In most of the frames of the OVA (even including the BD rips), there are black lines on the very edge of the screen, usually on the top and left/right side. What i have been doing is clipping these off, because the black line shows up as a gap in the thumb-nails and i find it unattractive. For any future image uploads, would you be willing to do the same? To preserve (approximately) the aspect ratio of the original image, what i have been doing is clipping off the same number of pixels on each side. For example, if there's a 3px black line on the right side, then i clip 3px off the right and then 3px off the top or bottom to balance it out. Rank links are partially updated. I think i got all of the Alliance ones, will work on the Imperial ones next. 2. I have successfully replaced most instances of 'FPA' and 'ship' in category/article names and links with 'Alliance' and 'vessel', as we'd discussed. Carrying over the style you've been using for a while now, i think we should probably make 'Alliance' the preferred terminology instead of 'FPA'. (It kind of sounds better, and it matches what's used in the Japanese dialogue.) Then i believe the only other major thing that needs changed is 'FPA–Imperial War' and the like, but i'll hold off on that. 3. Oh, edit: I also finished updating the LaserDisc/DVD name citation things. There will be a few left that had unusual formatting, but i think i've got 90% of them. 4. Question: Should we start italicising vessel names? It is the traditional style, and Wikipedia, Memory Alpha, and Wookieepedia all do it... but i don't know. I could go either way. I was hoping episode 103-110 would be ready so I could do Droisen's Kücrain, or find my ideal screenshot of Eisenach's Vissarr (its from Episode 107, lovely pic of it), but it may I'll just have to put up a different screencap and change it later. Brilliant job on the ship articles, they are really coming along! I wanted to ask your thoughts on what we should do when information is not available for a ship though. Several of our articles seem to be fully sourced from Fleet Files as far as their mechanical details, but because the FF thing doesn't always include complete information, we have stuff like '? forward cannons' or whatever. Is that a conscious choice you've been making, or something else? My thoughts personally would be that we shouldn't include place-holders as a rule, but you are the ship expert, what do you reckon? Also, i have been updating a lot of name variations recently, and in doing so it occurred to me that we've never come up with a formal standard for the ordering. It's a minor thing, but i think it's important for consistency. What do you think about something like this (obviously omitting any that are not applicable)? *English name (Original DVD subtitles) *English name (LaserDisc subtitles) *English name (Fleet File Collection Vol.#) *Japanese name (Original DVD subtitles) *Japanese name (LaserDisc subtitles) *Japanese name (Fleet File Collection Vol.#) *English name (English fan sources) *Japanese name (Japanese fan sources) In other words, official English names first, then official Japanese names, then unofficial English names, then unofficial Japanese names. I've been putting "?" in as a concious choice, because in terms of some ships (especially Imperial ships) we simply don't know (I'm thinking specifically of Brunhild, Nurnber, and Perceval). I was going to raise this, but I'm wondering if "armament" should be deleted from the ship info box altogether. In many cases, we can only determine the *minimum* amount of cannons from when we see them fire one time. Perhaps the number of cannon should instead be noted in a "Design" section in the main article? I dunno to be honest. Maybe I should replace "?" with "unknown". :I agree with the name variation order (noting for the sake of completeness that the FFCs don't have any English, sadly) - I averted my mind to the need for all the articles to have the same name variation order in the past few days, I believe I've been following that order, more or less. I say go for it. Thanks for the headsup re citation codes btw. :Also for the record, in terms of FFC citations for "crested" or otherwise named standard battleships which aren't given specific FFC treatment (i.e. Sindur, Langenberg, Theodoricus, Watzmann etc have been given specific miniature treatment, but so far Heilenheim hasn't), I'm simply going to give them FFC citations from one of the collections which have a non-crested, unnamed ship. That is what we do for the other infoboxes (like if we don't know a character's birth date, we just don't mention it). ::As far as getting rid of it entirely, i'm not sure i understand. Is all of our information on the subject of armaments just coming from someone counting up the number of little holes on the sides of the ships or something? Its not entirely unreasonable IMO, that is what those holes are, after all (we have more than enough evidence from the show to establish that). I would say that we can be 95% sure of forward cannons, but for the other parts of the ship i think you're right, that can get tricky. Especially since it's been demonstrated (in Julian's first Spartanian battle) that some of the weapons have shutters that blend in seamlessly with the ship hulls. :/ I am open to whatever you think on that subject, if you want to get rid of them then you can just delete the armament line from the infoboxes. Since you've been working a lot with ship information, I was wondering if you knew much about the Fleet's composition? Command hierarchy, that kind of thing. It's all a bit confusing to me, as the Empire seems to have BOTH a professional military service (under the command of the high admirals who answer directly to the Kaiser) AND more feudal-style armies, that answer directly to local lords. Otherwise I'm a bit confused about how Braunschweig and Littenheim were able to muster such a big fleet without being soldiers. Unless that was all just Merkatz' fleet in the civil war? But that doesn't make much sense to me, either. So, basically, I'd like to try and discuss these various issues sometime. Maybe tomorrow or the next day I'll make a crude [[Imperial Fleet]] page and we can try and figure things out there. At the very least, I'd like to assign names for the various fleets we know about, even if it's only so simple as "Kircheis Fleet" and "Reuenthal Fleet." I was someone involved in the fansubbing of season 2 of the LOGH series as shown at Cornell University in 2000, from the Chinese VCD subs. I am also in possession of the remastered DVD versions (original from Japan), which includes Chinese subs, updated ship titles and some production sketches, as well as the LOGH Data Book in Japanese (of which I can partially decipher some). I also have all the side stories, including Spiral Labyrinth which depicts the 2nd Battle of Tiamat. For any technical history, the changes in style between the old ships as seen at Dagon, the ships at the 2nd Battle of Tiamat, and the "modern" ships of the OVA era would probably need some rationalizing. There doesn't seem to be explicit reasoning given. I have also partially completed a Chinese-English translation of the LOGH side story "The Battle of Starzone Dagon" (from a Chinese webpage which had the Japanese to Chinese translation). I am curious as to this wiki's position on the canonicity of the reference book information (which includes some timeline on the histories of some of the lesser FPA flagships) and also if I were to finish the rest of the Dagon translation. If you were hoping for detailed exhaustive statistics, I'm afraid you will be disappointed however. The data book is written from the perspective of a FPA magazine publication without high level security clearance so much data is missing, and there are some potential inconsistencies with what is observed in the anime. FYI: The Imperial ship count at Dagon was 52,600. No precise FPA count is given but in the narrative it is mentioned that the Imperial fleet is approximately 2 times that of the FPA. Also from the data book, it appears that the flagships are prototypes or test beds of new technology before it is disseminated into widespread mass production for the standard ships. The flagships in the data book are sometimes described with various improved or upgraded systems. It also appears from the entries that the FPA was also on the verge of a new generation of ships, much as how the Brunhild and Parzival heralded a new era of Imperial ship design. The Leda II was a forerunner for the new generation of cruisers much as Triglav was a prototype for the new generation of battleships (the Triglav's entry in the data book suggests there were plans to construct 3 additional ships) . These plans and the new generation of ships were however effectively aborted after the Battle of Amritsar and subsequent civil war. :Hi, good to hear from you! Have a look at our canon section in the 'policy' part of the wiki (check the sidebar). We have a pretty inclusive canon policy where the rule is basically that the anime takes precedence, but by all means mention other material. IMO, in practice, such conflicts rarely arise because there's very little in the main series, films and gaiden to contradict anything. I personally am in possession of the Fleet Files 1-10 currently being brought out by Wright Staff/ Alba Create, and the stuff you mention about Dagon Starzone is something I believe is in the booklets that come with those miniatures as well (relating to the old-style Dagon warships). I'm not a translator though so basically the books only tell me dimensions and crew numbers, lol. You'll find citations for those (i.e. dimensions and crew numbers) in several of the warships entries, but given you sound like a big fan, I'm sure you're familiar with the FFC series anyway. :One thing I'm very interested in is the DVD remastered versions of the Gaiden. The versions available for download from Central Anime are completely absent the captions that name ships/ characters (except for Spiral Labyrinth, oddly enough) and this is something the wiki needs for characters / ships which are Gaiden-exclusive (though Gaiden-exclusive ships are often named on fansites, we do like to list all the variations possible, as you will have seen). If you could provide this information, it would be much appreciated. :Anyway, please stay and contribute if you have the time. There's really only three or so of us working on the wiki and though I'm proud of how well we're doing, helping hands are needed. All you need to do is familiarize yourself with our citation policies and other rules - I suggest you contact kine about issues relating to citations for specific sources.
