Gineipaedia:Closure

Gineipaedia is closed for contributions as of 24 December 2024. This page is part of a static archive. See Gineipaedia:Closure for details.

Gineipaedia was closed for contributions indefinitely on 24 December 2024. What remains here is a purely static archive of its content as of that date. It is unknown how long the archive will stay up.

Fans of LotGH are encouraged to pick up where Gineipaedia left off. This page contains download links to full archives of the site's contents, including images, which may be used to kick-start a new wiki project. The admins may be willing to donate the gineipaedia.com domain if a consensus forms around a successor project.

Currently it seems that the /r/logh subreddit and its associated Discord are the most accessible places to discuss LotGH in English; possibly the creation of a new wiki could be coordinated from there.

Archive links

The following archives represent the state of Gineipaedia as of approx. 05:00 24 December 2024 (UTC), when its database was locked to further contributions.

This page was created after the fact and is not included in any of the archives.

For details about the software Gineipaedia was running, see Special:Version.

dump.xml.xz

The XML dump produced by MediaWiki's dumpBackup.php script. This contains all of the public textual content of the site, such as articles, redirects, and templates. It does not contain images, nor any site-specific data like user accounts, admin logs, or MediaWiki settings. It can be imported into a new MediaWiki project using the importDump.php script. See Gineipaedia:Creative_Commons_licence for licence information.

Size: 2.8 MiB (145 MiB uncompressed). MD5 sum: 7d4bcc3e09b92504d6b25aa531696c16

images.tar.xz

The structure of MediaWiki's /w/images directory as it existed on the server's file system. This contains all user-uploaded images and the thumbnails MediaWiki generated for them. You should be able to just drop it into the /w directory of a new wiki installation. You will have to fix the file permissions afterwards. Most of these images are owned by the licence holders of their respective LotGH IP and were uploaded with the understanding that they fell under fair use / fair dealing. A few images are more explicitly licensed; you will need to cross-reference with the XML dump to determine which.

Size: 506 MiB (542 MiB uncompressed). MD5 sum: 96ab896941c9bda7d4499431fb722286

static-original.tar.xz

All the files needed to host a static archive of Gineipaedia similar to this one, minus uploaded images. This version of the archive contains the original files as they were captured by wget right after the site was locked. It does not contain the modifications that were made afterwards to add banners announcing the site's closure, etc. Nor does it contain pages that are unnecessary for a static archive, like history, login, edit, and admin pages. Redirects have not been deduplicated. File names are not Windows-safe. For convenience, an example nginx config is included.

Size: 8.1 MiB (445 MiB uncompressed). MD5 sum: 683f0bea859cc3a86ffef43bd00ccdfa

static-modified.tar.xz

Like the 'original' static archive above, but including the modifications that were made afterwards to announce the site's closure.

Size: 8.2 MiB (442 MiB uncompressed). MD5 sum: d1d5cba783ba89c8c26f8e683188d5c1

Details

Gineipaedia was started in its current form in April 2011. Several people made this happen, but there was only one technical admin, who was at the time very young and stupid, and made many mistakes in setting up the server. Due to these mistakes as well as a general lack of motivation to work on MediaWiki it was difficult to keep it updated. The last major technical update was in December 2015, when the server was migrated to Ubuntu 14.04 and HTTPS was enabled. There was an attempt to migrate to a new MediaWiki installation in 2018, but it fizzled out, mainly due to theme- and extension-related difficulties.

The extremely outdated nature of the server made it insecure and put all of Gineipaedia's users at risk. This caused a lot of anxiety for the technical admin, who wanted to pass the project on to someone else or, failing that, wind it down. After some internal discussion, it was agreed that another admin would take over the project, but only in a steward's capacity, as they did not have the technical knowledge to do more, and there was no good way to vet outside candidates.

An attempt was made to spin up a new VM running a more modern OS, Web server, etc., before transferring ownership, but this too was aborted when it was found that the version of MediaWiki Gineipaedia was on would not run on any version of PHP released after 2015. As a result it was decided to simply convert the site to a static archive, which you see here, pending its eventual shut-down. The archive was brought up on 2025-04-13.

There is no evidence that Gineipaedia was ever breached, and the last remaining database dump that includes account data will be deleted permanently soon after publishing this archive. However, if you had an account here and you used the same password for accounts on other sites, it's strongly recommended that you update those just in case.

Thanks

Many people have contributed to Gineipaedia over the years. Thank you to all of them. Special thanks go to Canary, Vympel, Iracundus, and Glacierfairy, who were so instrumental in founding and maintaining Gineipaedia.
