Just a random thought - is it just me, or does it seem like Artland only thought up the need for destroyers in the setting come season 2? Both Alliance and Imperial destroyers are conspicuous by their complete absence in season 1 (especially obvious in MCISS, where Reinhard's fleet has the usual battleships, cruisers and the (rarely seen otherwise) gunships, but no destroyers. - Possible but unless we get dates for the production sketches or an interview saying so, we may never know. However by the time of the main series, the main characters were already of flag rank and the focus on major fleet battles meant the kind of skirmishes and small unit actions a destroyer might see would be relatively irrelevant to the main story. Maybe that is why limited camera time is given to them, except for the occasional shot where they get hit and blown up. In the gaiden, one sees more destroyer and cruiser action, as those ship types are more suited to individual ship stories.
- As for the Alliance destroyer, I still cannot quite count accurately how many missiles are actually fired from its launcher in episode 48.
- One side issue though is do we ever have a statement or crew count of the Imperial destroyer or the older Imperial destroyer Hameln II? The reason I ask is because the DVD features give a number in the double digits that seems incredibly low, especially when compared to the Alliance destroyer figures. I am wondering whether it is a typo. Iracundus 14:27, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- I can't recall off the top of my head, it'd have to be somewhere in Mutineer / Uprising if anywhere. I tried counting the missiles in episode 48 too, failed misreably. At least a dozen though. I find "not less than" and "at least" good statements to use in this context. Vympel 07:48, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
- As it is, the licensed material crew figures are problematic. When you compare casualties to destroyed ships /soldiers to ship numbers in general throughout the series, a fairly consistent number of ~120 men per ship on average is reached throughout, without significant variation. - We see in Episode 27 the distribution of ships in a small fleet and destroyers vastly outnumbered the battleships. The Databook says the estimate was 2,000 battleships in a fleet (presumably commanded by an Admiral). If we take the approximate ratios of the fleet in Episode 27 as a guideline, then that means for a fleet of 15,000 there will be 2,000 battleships, about 4,000 cruisers, about 8,000 destroyers, and 1,000 or less carriers. Now the crews for the Alliance destroyer is given as 164. If Imperial destroyers are about the same, then it sort of makes sense. Much of the fighting and dying will be the destroyers. When we see the camera shot of a cruiser or battleship being destroyed, it is actually a less common occurence compared to all the destroyers being destroyed, but just as movies tend to show people getting killed in a battle because it is more dramatic than showing people blocking attacks with shields and armor, the animation is showing those instances where a big ship happens to bite the dust.
