Royal Sanford (Japanese: ロイヤル・サンフォード) was the former Supreme Chairman of the Free Planets Alliance High Council and therefore the leader of the Free Planets Alliance. After the taking of Iserlohn Fortress, the Sanford Administration chose to launch an invasion of the Galactic Empire instead of seeking a negotiated peace treaty. Ostensibly to overthrow the autocracy and tyranny of the Goldenbaum Dynasty, the underlying motive was in fact to shore up flagging opinion polls before the next election. The invasion was poorly planned and was a disaster, resulting in all members of the Sanford Administration on the High Council being voted out of office except for those members that had opposed the invasion in the first place.

Legacy

Aside from suffering from internal corruption, the Sanford Administration's disastrous invasion critically weakened the Alliance's military strength, rendering it vulnerable to further attack. The military ended up blaming the political establishment for the disaster and this festering discontent would ultimately lead to the coup launched by the National Salvation Military Council, which was composed of disaffected military officers.
