Imperial guard
Originally I would have thought that only nobles could serve in the Imperial Guard, or at least only nobles could be officers (kind of like in the King of France's Military Household), but I guess that is not the case since Kisling was one. —Goldenbaum Loyalist 19:02, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
- I can think of a very good reason why not. All the palace and noble intrigues mean it would be a risk to have a noble in charge of the Imperial Guard with knowledge of the Kaiser's whereabouts or direct access to the Kaiser. Nobles could have family connections or other feudal/political ties that could lead to divided loyalties or render them susceptible to being coerced or compromised. While commoners might still be bribed, they would not be as likely to have other motives for acting against the Kaiser, especially if they are entirely dependent on the Kaiser for their livelihood and standing (i.e. no divided loyalties). The Imperial Guard that went to the future Sigismund II due to the death of his sister seems to have been an exception, by having a relative also in close proximity to the Kaiser.
