Reestablishment
Did Reinhard seek to reestablish the Senate as part of his reforms? Strayor 12:53, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- No. He left Hildegard to decide whether or not to re-establish any representative body. Reinhard's reforms as far as I understand them was removal of noble rights, relaxation of restrictions on free speech, opening up the financial system to commoners, reforming the tax code to be more impartial and freeing up confiscated noble property for public use. Reinhard was government for the people but not by the people. Iracundus 13:05, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Right, the most famous line about his ruling style. I was just curious. I wasn't thinking they would be democratically elected or anything, I was just thinking he may have opened the Senate to talented individuals or reformer nobles, but as I say this I realize he already put as much talent into his government as he could, nullifying the Senate's need, at least in Reinhard's view. The efficiency of a well run dictatorship is hard to argue against. Strayor 13:14, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
- Remember that Reinhard's view was that democracy stifled the talented and promoted the mediocre or the demagogue. A lot of his initial growth in power was due to his eye for talent and recruitment of this talent that was otherwise stagnating within the rigid Goldenbaum dynasty and nobility power structure. The problem is an eye for talent is not reliably transmitted from generation to generation and picking the wrong talents or wrong successor was some of the issues highlighted even in the history episode about the Goldenbaum dynasty. - Indeed. Strayor 14:04, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
