Invitation to an Opera (Japanese: 歌劇（オペラ）への招待) is the 61st episode of the Legend of Galactic Heroes OVA.

Synopsis

Free Planets Alliance High Council Supreme Chairman João Rebelo visits Yang Wen-li in prison. Yang realises he will be used as a scapegoat by the Alliance to avoid Imperial intervention. Walter von Schönkopf and Dusty Attemborough reorganise Yang's former subordinates. The Rosen Ritter rise up in full rebellion, and the Alliance troops sent to suppress the Rosen Ritter are no match for them in terms of battle experience and morale. During the ensuing chaos, the Rosen Ritter kidnaps Rebelo, who is en route to an appointment with the Imperial consul Helmut Lennenkampf. After Schönkopf demands the Alliance military to release Yang, using Rebelo as a hostage, the military brass decides to sacrifice the Supreme Chairman and orders Yang to be executed. Frederica Greenhill Yang and Schönkopf save Yang at the last moment, and escape together into the night.

Background information

• The opera which Rebelo is supposed to watch with Lennenkampf is Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Master-Singers of Nuremberg). The segment which Lennenkampf was watching before leaving abruptly is an aria by Hans Sachs, one of the main characters, in the third scene of the second act.
