Subspace is an extradimensional domain parallel to but separate from the rest of the universe. It is the medium through which faster-than-light travel and and communication is possible.
Disruptions in subspace, such as those caused by initiating an improper warp jump, can produce dangerous affects in nearby spacetime. (Legend of Galactic Heroes Volume 2: Ambition)
