Ship Class
In episode 6, what they first call the Bremen when it is reported to Stockhausen is in both Chinese sub and Japanese audio as 輕型巡航艦 which literally means light cruiser (though I fail to see how it is in any way different from the stock standard cruiser seen in fleet battles). The only way I see how they might have gotten "patrol ship" from is from mistranslating 巡 which can be potentially translated as either "cruise" or "patrol":
巡航艦 is strictly speaking "cruise warship" 巡邏艦 is strictly speaking "patrol warship"
In today's world of light ships, the boundary between these two terms can be nebulous and some places seem to use the terms interchangeably. However LOGH's ship classes are based off of earlier WWI and WWII terminology.
I chalk this up to the original fansubbers failing to understand that in standard military terminology 巡航艦 means "cruiser". Iracundus 08:06, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Oh. I took it as a description of the ship's purpose, not its type (i.e., a cruiser that happens to patrol, as opposed to one that doesn't, like the Leda II). I was just going off my memory of the subs, though — if the dialogue doesn't support it, it's my mistake :/ ♥ kine @ 08:59, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, there is a fan interpretation here. This particular scene in the novel refers the ship to be the Bremen class light cruiser. ブレーメン型軽巡洋艦 Novel 1 chapter 5 part 3. Almael 19:03, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
