Novel news
Just edited the front page a bit, but thought I should "source" the info. I contacted the publisher directly and was told that they expected to be able to release the first LoGH novel this autumn. Huzzah!Canary 18:38, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
- Awesome. Vympel 11:31, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
- And Amazon has the first book listed! Yay!Canary 21:07, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
- Some more news: the books will be paperbacks measuring 5.25" by 8"; they will also be available digitally in Amazon Kindle format, the pre-order for which should go up sometime in February.Canary 11:40, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Current events
I'm thinking... Should we rename this section to "Important events" or something given how infrequently it's updated? Then we could also add future events to it--likedates for the new anime adaptation, etc. Canary 06:29, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, well, I'm going to change it for now (because I think today's event is at least of peripheral relevance). We can always change things back later, after all. Also: I didn't change the "h2 id" because I have no idea what that is. Also: I kind of want to make page(s) for the other Tanaka series, but it's not really something we need. Shoulder badges
Did anybody try to analyze the shoulder badges used in the FPA fleet?
- What do you mean by analyze? The patches are listed https://gineipaedia.com/wiki/Free_Planets_Star_Fleet#Licensed_sources Iracundus 12:42, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah those. Probably I should try colorize them or something. But I guess it would be difficult to find all of them in the anime. BTW, the Iserlohn patch spells "Iselrone". Hellerick 15:01, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
- All those patches do I think appear, even if briefly in the anime. The patch is indeed misspelled. It is one of those internal spell checking errors in the series. Iracundus 04:46, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
Premiere
Anyone got any idea how us non-Japanese plebs could watch the new series? How long do we think we'll have to wait for fansubs? Vympel 00:08, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
- Depends if any group is waiting to do it as soon as it airs. Incidentally new info and character designs available https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-03-01/legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-tv-anime-adds-6-cast-members/.128453 Those Alliance uniforms just don't do it for me. The Imperial uniforms are alright, albeit uninspired. The character designs though are meh, and that's being generous IMO. Iracundus 15:28, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
- The uniforms are alright but I don't liked the face and hair design of the characters. —Goldenbaum Loyalist 18:45, 2 March 2018 (UTC)
- The official site has Frederica Greenhill now. The face and hair design look like generic pretty girl. We also get to see the emblems for both sides. Iracundus 13:34, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
- I guess I can tolerate the new character designs, but I find the Alliance uniform design to be too garish for my taste. The same goes for its emblem (the Imperial one is also not much better). Glacierfairy 03:55, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
- Can I get a link to Greenhill's design and the new emblems? Impossible to find for me. Vympel 01:30, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
- Here is the link. Just scroll down the page and you will see it. Glacierfairy 02:26, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- Cheers! Yeah, not a fan of her design. Vympel 13:48, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
- https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2018-03-22/new-legend-of-the-galactic-heroes-anime-posts-visual-screenshots-episode-1-intro/.129332 Looks like that may be Hyperion. Really not liking the Alliance ship designs which seem to be just random lumpish blocks. Iracundus 11:25, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
- Its like they want to have their cake and eat it too. It's not a remake of the OVA, but the Brünhild is clearly inspired by the OVA original, and so is the Hyperion (same color). Vympel 05:53, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
- The 2nd PV is out. Looks like they have decided to retain the Empire using German and the Alliance using English. It is really hard to differentiate the Alliance rank insignia though. Glacierfairy 08:37, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- That actually looks pretty good to me. The ships look great, and they even remade the shot where the Alliance battleship fires through its own ally. Vympel 09:57, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- The Alliance insignia seems to be a combination of sleeve and collar. For example, the branch of the military seems to be denoted by the collar symbol, with the command staff apparently having different length of laurels on their collar, while the fleet command is denoted by the inverted red chevrons (in place of the OVA orange kerchief). We see also that the Imperial fighters retain the 180 degree rotatable thrusters. I just hope they retain the focus showing the strategy and formations instead of just showing random action shots and random ships in a confused brawl. Right now the hardest thing for me is trying to differentiate the different classes of ships. Iracundus 11:50, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
The opening sequence and song is out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5fk80I3orw The lyrics are pretty gibberish though. We can see some more characters and also a few more ships such as Triglav and Barbarossa. The ending sequence and song is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li4OJEKoA8o Iracundus 08:56, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Leaked unsubbed 1st episode at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_2OskXwsg0&feature=youtu.be and is essentially the Battle of Astarte all over again. Fahrenheit's flagship is given as Heimdall and Merkatz's is Minerva (which is a break from the Norse naming convention). The Imperial UI strangely seems to use English, and those Imperial bridge crew seats look uncomfortable with no backs and round seat bottoms. So far they seem to be following the OVA for pacing so I have no idea how much they will be able to cover in 12 episodes. Iracundus 09:41, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- Assuming they cut away the OVA-only scenes from the original adaptation (such as 'When the Rain of Grief Comes...'), and choose not to include 'The Klopstock Incident' and 'The Actress Exits' which are from the Gaiden, I think 12 episodes would be sufficient to cover up till the Battle of Amritsar. On a side note, both the OP and the ED sound uninspired to me. Glacierfairy 11:02, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- The OP has a catchy bit in the middle but it is pretty generic pop, and the lyrics are gibberish really. The lyrics of the OVA openings bore some relation to overall story. 'The Klopstock Incident' and 'The Actress Exits' were useful IMO to show the internal state of the Empire, with its palace intrigues, just as 'Jessica's Struggle' was necessary to show the internal state of the Alliance. So far in episode 1 we see they have focused almost exclusively on the Imperial POV, cutting out the pre-battle Yang bits where he exhorted concentration of forces instead of trying for the Dagon 3 sided envelopment and Lapp died offscreen. Iracundus 11:29, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- My impression with episode 1 is that the battles felt way too fast (granted, they are supposed to be quick routs) and lacking in impact. It also seemed to lack the sense of massive distances from the OVA. I think I can get used of the new spaceship designs but they move way too much like generic fictional spaceships. I still prefer the OVA spaceships where they at least exhibit auxiliary thrusters for turning. And of course, the lack of a classical soundtrack is very disconcerting. Glacierfairy 12:05, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- I agree on the speed of the battles, and also the speed of the ship turns. It makes them lack a sense of mass and scale. Also I did not like how the ships banked like airplanes when they turned, as there is no need to bank in space, and in the OVA, the ships did not bank. The battle diagram did not convey how spread apart the Alliance's 3 fleets where, because they looked like they were next door to each other. Iracundus 12:12, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- Lapp dying offscreen is one of the factors that made the battle feel too fast in my opinion. Hopefully they would backtrack to it in episode 2. I'm also concerned about how they would treat Jessica since her voice actress has not been revealed yet. Glacierfairy 14:08, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- Worst case scenario would have Jessica cut out entirely, but that in turn weakens the impact of Lapp's death. That could be why Lapp does not have an extended death scene. Iracundus 14:37, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
I went and rewatched the original episode 1 and compared it with the new episode 1. Turns out in the old episode 1 the 4th and 6th Fleets got destroyed extremely fast as well (perhaps even faster?). The main difference is that the old episode interspersed the battle scenes with scenes of Yang and the 2nd Fleet, thus creating the illusion of the passage of time. Overall, the new episode is comprised of the battle sequence of Overture to a New War compressed into the timeframe of a standard 24 minute episode like the old episode 1, so I guess one can say they tried to portray too much with too little time. Glacierfairy 15:12, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- The OVA also had the tactic of sometimes using the intro and ending time to squeeze out a few more minutes of content. Iracundus 15:24, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Sadly, I missed out on the leak of the first episode. Apparently crunchyroll has the streaming rights. No idea if that includes englis subs. Vympel 07:58, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- I grabbed it as an mp4 before it went away. It's 129 MB if you really want it. Iracundus 08:53, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks but all good now - I got a crunchyroll subscription today and I managed to watch the whole thing in 1080p. Then I got it by another method too (1.1GB) for the purpose of screencaps :) And yes it is fully subbed Vympel 14:57, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think there may be a subbing error that I have found already in the 1st episode. When Reinhard invites Kircheis to drink some wine prior to the battle, the sub makes it sound like he has a 410 year old bottle of wine, whereas I think he may be referring to a bottle from 719 UC (410 IC / 3519 CE), or year 410 Imperial Calendar. I swear we here at Gineipaedia could probably do a better job because we at least stay internally consistent and know the background references. Iracundus 21:33, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- The subs are mostly consistent with the OVA in terms of character and ship names (besides the Heimdall and Minerva). As far as I can tell, only Fogel has a different name (Fogal in the new series). But there's a whole bunch of translation issues I do not like. Besides the 410 IC (719 UC / 3519 CE) wine issue, there's also the inconsistencies in translating 軍. The subs kept on flip-flopping between Navy and Army. Also, I think translating Pastolle's orders as to the "5th Fleet" and "7th Fleet" is misleading, since there are only three numbered fleets in the Battle of Astarte. It would be more appropriate to translate them as "5th Squadron" and "7th Squadron" (that said, I think in the original audio Pastolle didn't use the term 分艦隊). Glacierfairy 02:15, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
Second episode thoughts...First Imperial ship casualty does not occur til almost 2/3 of the way through, no Wallenstein ship destruction, and we don't get to see Erlache disobey and die. So much for following the novels closely. Too much time doing recap of previous episode and I see this a flaw of the alternating POV during battle episodes. Too much time spent on minor tech details like the drones repairing the Alliance bridge. And far too much ship banking like a plane. The ships feel massless. Neue Sansoucci exterior looks nothing like its namesake. Iracundus 21:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- I didn't notice the absence of Patroklos vs Wallenstein or Erlache's death, which probably says how well the episode engaged me. There was wasted time in showing things we had already seen in the previous episode, but on the other hand I think Episode 1 and 2 did an admirable job of hitting Overture's major beats in 50 minutes of runtime - more effectively than Episode 1 and 2 of the OVA, I think. Especially in terms of Yang and Lapp. I appreciated the technical detail with the robots and gel, though. That's a nice bit of worldbuilding along the lines of the accelerated sleep beds. Vympel 00:20, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- I must say I'm confused over how closely they are going to stick with the original novels. So they restored Lao to appear as he did in the novels, but now Fischer belongs to the 2nd Fleet instead of the 4th Fleet? I don't understand. Glacierfairy 03:47, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- Did they ever represent they were going to stick very closely to the original novels? It seems clear that they're taking visual cues from the OVA and also making their own adjustments, which is fine by me. There's nothing in the novel saying that Barbarossa is a gleaming red ship, for example. At least not so far as I've read. Vympel 03:50, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- I would have thought a more faithful adaptation would be a major selling point for this new series, otherwise there is not much reason to re-adapt in the first place. There are obviously gaps in the novels which has to be filled up in the animated adaptation, like the colour of Barbarossa, but in this case I don't see how keeping Fischer as "a survivor of the 4th Fleet" would detract the storyline. Unless of course their objective in shoehorning Fischer into the 2nd Fleet is to create someone to respond to Yang's strategy. Glacierfairy 04:21, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think the last reason is the most likely reason for Fischer and to introduce him as a character for the future so they do not need to use time for exposition later. The wasted time recapping is a big factor fo me as it reduces the amount of time for other world building or other little vignettes. Time is already so limited so they cannot afford to really waste on repetition. Iracundus 05:44, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
Episode 3 - a wonderful combination of exposition on galactic history / the Empire / Rudolf, Reinhard and Kircheis. A 20 minute episode that felt only 2 minutes long. Waiting every week for an episode is kind of infuriating. Vympel 13:43, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- Annerose’s caterpillar eyelashes distracted me. Their house looks far too ornate for what is supposed to be a poor knight’s home. The portrayal of Reinhard’s fight with the schoolboys IMO failed to show how Kircheis restrains Reinhard from going too far, which is a key point when it comes later to Westerland. The multiple added details about the spoiled noble cadets seemed a bit overdone. The first entourage scene would have sufficed. The whole riding servants like horses was definitely overdone and I think better use could have been done with that time. I do not exactly hate DNT but it all feels very “meh” to me. Iracundus 03:24, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- The brief history of the galaxy felt too brief to me! But I guess it is inevitable, having only a few minutes to cover what the OVA did in a full episode. And once again I get the impression that this new series is sanitising away most (if not all) of the violent scenes present in the OVA. In the OVA Battle of Astarte we get to see soldiers dying horrifically when their ships exploded but in the DNT Battle of Astarte we only get to see the wreckage of the ships. Likewise in this episode we don't actually get to see Reinhard beating up his bullies, only the aftermath. This direction is rather concerning to me, because it is downplaying the "war is hell" concept that's present in the old OVA. Glacierfairy 07:23, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- According to logh's reddit, there may be some sort of ratings issue with showing that sort of violence (i.e. Reinhard beating kids up). Not sure if true though. As to history, at the equivalent point in the OVA (Episode 4) we were told not much. The OVA sprinkled that info over multiple episodes, including what was it - two documentaries? Vympel 09:12, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- LOGH: 'Julian's Journey, Mankind's Journey' and LOGH: 'To Earth' are the two documentary episodes, although in this case, only the first is relevant since it is based on the prologue of volume 1 of the novels, whereas the second appeared much later in the novels. What I find interesting is that the OVA actually had a brief summary of the history of the galaxy just like DNT: 'An Indomitable Prodigy', but it occurred at the start of LOGH: 'Cool, Clear Artificial Eyes' instead, after Yang captured Iserlohn. Glacierfairy 09:28, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
- The intro parallels the OVA episode 8 intro almost exactly. On further reflection, what I now find puzzling is Reinhard verbally expressing intent to commit high treason while in front of a statue of Rudolf with cameras in its eyes. Even if they are not aware of the cameras being present, they make a point of saluting in front of the statue, clearly because they know they have to be seen as following social norms which means they know they are potentially under observation. If they can concede they may be visually observed, why not also audio observation? If there are cameras, why not microphones? Iracundus 09:36, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
Episode 4 first viewing observations. Easter egg with one of the bottles of liquor in the bar titled Mafia 730. Other noticed detail was about the weather report on El Facil using Fahrenheit scale, not Celsius (argh). The portrayal of Yang's escape from El Facil makes him appear less humble and more manipulative. Problem is this makes Lynch's later resentment justified. One of Yang's books when he is unpacking is titled Private Life of Rudolf von Goldenbaum. Also they got Yang's rank wrong in the English subs. He was promoted to 少佐 (Lt. Cmdr) but the subbers put it down as rear admiral (i.e. 少将) or 4 ranks higher! Iracundus 16:39, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- The 730 Mafia reference amused me as well! But yeah, I don't really like how the El Facil affair is portrayed as well. It also feels as if that segment is rushed, so as to flesh out the portrayal of the relationship between Yang, Jean and Jessica in the rest of the episode. I guess I'm infected by modern anime aesthetics though, because I found teenage Frederica extremely cute. -.- Glacierfairy 17:07, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- I actually didn't like that cuteness or moe portrayal of Frederica. It seemed too much like pandering to the audience. I am not sure they really did a good job building the connection between Yang and Jessica either, at least compared to ONW. I would agree the El Facil affair was rushed, as it didn't explain really how Yang could get away beyond simply the Imperials being occupied with Lynch, since one could argue the Imperials could have detached ships to pursue the presumably slower civilian ships that lacked jamming. The OVA explaining they tricked the Imperials into thinking they were natural celestial objects. Iracundus 17:17, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Totally agree re: El-Facil. When it happened I was like "the hell, its like you left Lynch out to dry!". But then he explained later that Lynch wouldn't listen to him and dismissed him, which salvaged it for me. It was an oddly paced episode. El Facil should've been the focus, IMO. Still, loved the Alliance spacedock and the new Alliance HQ ('ITOC') Vympel 23:43, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- The pacing is really weird. For example, I'm pretty sure the final scene where Yang moves to Silverbridge Street and meets Julian happens a few years after El Facil but the way the episode presented it feels as if it happened right afterwards. Glacierfairy 08:00, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Re: ship design, I've been taking a lot of screencaps in preparation for wiki entries and have moved onto Alliance ships. They're quite well realised. Unlike in the OVA, where ships implausibly maneuvered backwards with tiny little gas thrusters (compared to the huge engines at their rear), the forward facing maneuvering engines on Alliance and Imperial ships are quite obvious, and we see the bank of three forward facing of an Alliance battleship ignite when Yang's C-4 plan is implemented. Bravo. Vympel 14:14, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- I still have difficulty picking apart the standard Alliance ships without pausing, even when there seems to be an example of a battleship, cruiser, and destroyer in the same frame. The very ponderousness of the ship movements in the OVA gave the ships a sense of scale and mass. I rewatched the battle scenes from DNT, and again the way they (and/or the camera) seem to bank, swoop and zoom around makes them seem like they have the mass of a plastic toy rather than the big behemoths of metal they are meant to be. Iracundus 15:15, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah for me that's not as big a deal. Ultimately we're talking about powers with the technology to hurtle ships through space at significant fractions of sublight speed - it stands to reason that their engines should be capable of pushing their ships so that they turn relatively quickly. And though they move quickly, there's still very much a sense of mass there. Vympel 09:40, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Just wanted to ask, is anybody taking screenshots of the new character designs? Also, how should we incorporate them in the character articles? —Goldenbaum Loyalist 20:57, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- I would say keep the DNT separate from the OVA since there can be details different in the actual events and timeline. Iracundus 23:49, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- Then should there be two separate articles for the original and the DNT version of characters? —Goldenbaum Loyalist 00:46, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if the differences in character details are major enough to warrant completely new articles though, at least for now. The only major difference so far that I noticed is that Jean and Jessica are portrayed as childhood friends. But that can be simply mentioned in a line under the Apocrypha section.
