Media/merchandise hierarchy

This thread has been moved from 'Media' for preservation purposes.

I've been trying to decide how best to organise the Media and Merchandise categories. Right now, i have Video games listed under Media. Technically that's accurate, video games are part of the media, but you could also argue that mrchandise is. So maybe Merchandise should go under Media then?

And what about the stage thing? Where would that go? Obviously theatre is a medium in the strict sense of the word, but is it one in the sense of 'the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely'?

If we assume it is, could we draw a line at 'top-level' works (i.e., those works upon which licensed works are based) and use this method?

Media
 |
 |-- Animation
 |
 |-- Creative staff
 |
 |-- Licensed merchandise
 | |
 | |-- Books
 | |
 | |-- Models
 | |
 | |-- Video games
 |
 |-- Manga
 |
 |-- Novels
 |
 |-- Theatre

Or should we use a Memory Alpha-style method, which would have us do an even bigger re-org into something like this:

Legend of Galactic Heroes
 |
 |-- Animation
 | |
 | |-- Films
 |
 |-- Audio
 | |
 | |-- Sound tracks
 |
 |-- Books
 | |
 | |-- Novels
 |
 |-- Creative staff
 |
 |-- Interviews
 |
 |-- Manga
 |
 |-- Models
 |
 |-- Theatre
 |
 |-- Video games
 |
 |-- Video releases

Both have their merits, i'd say. edit: Added a few more things to the list, to better match the way Memory Alpha do it. Perhaps this is the better method after all?  ♥ kine @ 18:43, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Re: Merchandise

An idea I had a while back... while perhaps not really suitable for a wiki site, I thought perhaps we could discuss it here. Basically, I think it might be cool to have embedded in the pages for each item here a poll-type thing, where any user can vote (only once, IP locked) on the quality of any given item. For example, for the Fleet Files, we could have people rate the merchanidise between a 1 and 5, with 5 being good and 1 bad.

It may be a bit too... commercial of an idea, but given the rather esoteric nature of logh merchandise, it's the kind of thing that might prove beneficial to our small collection of fans in the long run. Canary 01:22, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
