This Alliance battleship (Japanese: 戦艦) design served as the standard battleship design of Alliance fleets from the late stages of the Alliance–Imperial War to at least 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE) under the successor states of the El Facil Revolutionary Government and Iserlohn Republic.

Design

The standard Alliance battleship design shared many design similarities with other Alliance designs. It was essentially rectangular in shape with a box-like prow mounting the main weapons and one main engine in the rear.

In terms of armament, the ship mounts eight neutron beam cannons in the bow and multiple other cannons and other weapons on the port, starboard and dorsal sides. (Overture to a New War)

In addition, the battleship has multiple missile and decoy launchers, with two sets observed on the ship's mid-section and forward hull, mounted on both the dorsal and ventral side. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Amritsar Starzone', 'The Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone (Part Two)')

At least nine Spartanian fighters are docked to the battleship's ventral side in a half open hangar design, with the majority of the fighters protruding into space. They were launched by being dropped downward out of their hangars first. (LOGH: 'A Challenge to Arms')

The bridge consisted of an elevated command balcony for senior officers, attached to a central column with elevators and stairwells, with bridge crew stations situated on the lower level. (LOGH: 'A Challenge to Arms')

Role and Capabilities

A heavily armed and armoured front-line warship, the standard battleship design fought in all known fleet battles from at least 788 UC (479 IC / 3588 CE) to 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE), in large numbers.

In addition to forming the core of Alliance fleets, the standard battleship could serve as a flagship for officers in lieu of larger, dedicated flagship designs, up to the rank of Rear Admiral. One notable exception was the Ulysses which served as the flagship of Fleet Admiral Yang Wen-li. (HBSHBL: 'Truth Is the Daughter of Time'; LOGH: 'The Two-Headed Snake: The Battle of Rantemario').

Like all Alliance warships, it could not enter planetary atmospheres and land on the surface - crew were embarked and disembarked via the use of large shuttles which would dock to the exterior of the battleship. (LOGH: 'To El Facil', 'The Golden Lion Flag Loses Its Lustre')

The first vessel of this standard Alliance battleship design was completed in 740 UC (431 IC / 3540 CE). The design has been refined and improved since then. Altogether, over 200,000 ships have been produced over the course of this design's lifespan. The production process was heavily automated, reducing labour requirements, and used modular parts. Civilian experts estimated a new ship took between 4 to 6 months to produce. This was only 1/3 of the time needed to produce one of the dedicated flagship designs.

Early production models were initially armed with an electron beam cannon armament. These were eventually swapped out for neutron beam cannons. More recent ships used as squadron flagships were fitted with centralised fire control systems, allowing for multiple ships to concentrate their fire on one target.

In addition to the neutron beam cannons, this ship mounted the standard Alliance STPC-Mk12 railgun. These guns were 28 metres in length and fired a monocrystalline tungsten round at a velocity of 15,000 km per second (5% of lightspeed). The tungsten round had a copper coating, which was converted to a cloud of charged plasma which was then accelerated by electromagnetic fields. The round cleared the gun within microseconds. (Data Book: Mechanic & Seiyū Encyclopaedia, p. 137, 178)

The two large pure water tanks just aft of the bridge had two purposes. The primary purpose was to store propellant for use by the engine, and each tank held enough for 140 hours of normal cruising. Their secondary purpose was to absorb cosmic rays, radiation from engine backwash, and waste heat from other ship systems.

At the rear, the ship had a single large engine unit, like other Alliance warships. This arrangement was more efficient than the multiple smaller engine arrangement of their Imperial counterparts, but meant there was little or no redundancy in case of a hit to the engine. The tail panels and fins could be angled to redirect the thrust. They were capable of 5 degrees of motion in the horizontal axis, and 3 degrees in the vertical axis.
