This design was the main battleship class of the Galactic Empire during the time of first contact with the Free Planets Alliance, and served as the mainstay of Imperial forces during the Battle of Dagon in 640 UC (331 IC / 3440 CE)and the initial days of the Alliance–Imperial War. The most notable ship of this class was the Göttingen which served as the flagship of Grand Duke Herbert during the Battle of Dagon. This class was observed still in active service as late as 728 UC (419 IC / 3528 CE) during the Battle of Forseti. This class was eventually rendered obsolete, phased out of service, and replaced by newer designs. (DIS: 'Chapter I')

At the time, this ship class was the Empire's newest battleship class and formed the mainstay of Imperial forces. Its design was an evolution of the Galactic Federation's warships, and certain visual elements are similar. In that era, fleet sizes were on the order of thousands of ships, and so dedicated flagship classes were not needed.
The Empire's fleet doctrine of focusing on a smaller number of large calibre cannons is already apparent in this design. (Fleet File Collection Vol.1)
As the standard Alliance battleship of 740 UC (431 IC / 3540 CE) was still using electron beam cannons as primary weapons, this implies that older ship designs, such as the 640 UC (331 IC / 3440 CE) era Imperial battleship, also had electron beam cannons as their primary armament.
