Synopsis

In May 788 UC (479 IC / 3588 CE), the Free Planets Alliance and the Galactic Empire are engaged in a border skirmish near the planet El Facil. Sub-lieutenant Yang Wen-li, serving on board the flagship of the Alliance commander Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch, reminisces about his childhood, as well as how the untimely death of his father left him penniless and forced him to further his education in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy and become a soldier. Eventually, the Imperial fleet wins the skirmish and Lynch is forced to flee back to El Facil. However, the Imperial fleet, having received reinforcements, plans to capture El Facil in one fell swoop. Facing an immediate Imperial invasion, the civilians of El Facil plead the Alliance forces for an evacuation, and Lynch, preoccupied with his own evacuation plan, left Yang in charge of evacuating the civilians. Ultimately, Lynch and the other high-ranking military officers flee the planet, leaving Yang with the civilians (and NCOs) to fend for themselves. Nevertheless, Yang is able to make use of his superiors' escape as a diversion against the Imperial fleet and leads the civilian ships away from El Facil in the opposite direction. His successful evacuation of the civilians then earns him the title, "Hero of El Facil."

Background information

The book Yang's Lady Generals which Yang was reading is a reference to the legendary heroines hailing from the celebrated Yang family in Chinese folklore, which is in turn based on an actual Yang family whose various members served in the army of the Northern Han kingdom, and later the Song Dynasty between the 10th and 11th century.
