Military career

Wideborn gained the reputation as a "once-in-a-decade prodigy" during his time in the Free Planets Alliance Officer Academy and was the top student of the Class of 787. He was however a very inflexible tactician and a poor strategist, and was infamously defeated by Yang Wen-li during a particular battle simulation session in the Academy. Over that simulation, Wideborn focused on eliminating Yang directly, while the latter used his forces to cut off the former's supply line, then retreating to defensive positions. Lack of supplies forced Wideborn to retreat, giving Yang command of the field. He never acknowledged Yang's foresight, rather obtusely griping that he would have won in a straight fight. (SL: 'The Hero of El Facil')

By 794 UC (485 IC / 3594 CE), Wideborn was promoted to Captain and was assigned to be the chief of staff of Rear Admiral Ramsay Wartz. Although his rise in ranks could be considered as meteoric, he apparently never learned his lesson from his defeat against Yang. During a skirmish against an Imperial squadron under Reinhard von Lohengramm (then Müsel) prior to the Sixth Battle of Iserlohn on 6 November 794 UC (485 IC / 3594 CE), he advised his superior to organise the ships of their squadron in a textbook formation but was caught by surprise when Reinhard turned his formation against him and ultimately perished when Reinhard's ships destroyed Wartz's flagship. Once more, Wideborn had been faced with a man who fought with fluid tactics and who didn't go for textbook direct engagements. This left Wideborn utterly at a loss, and his last moments were spent griping that Reinhard's tactics went against common sense. (HBSHBL: 'Truth Is the Daughter of Time')
