Service history
The flagship of the 5th Fleet, the Rio Grande participated in the Alliance invasion of Imperial territory. With Alliance supply lines cut off, the 5th Fleet was engaged by the Reuenthal Fleet until the fleet was ordered to retreat. It went on to fight at the Battle of Amritsar before successfully withdrawing from Imperial space. (DNT: 'The Verge of Death (Part Two)', 'Amritsar')
Design
The Rio Grande was a substantially modified version of the Alliance's standard battleship design. Equipped with the usual antenna arrays that distinguish Alliance flagships, it also featured a series of three port and starboard facing armament arrays at the top of the dorsal hull, in contrast to the single array on most other flagships and the standard battleship. Forward armament was concentrated in a single installation in the prow, together with a pair of large horizontally arranged pylons protruding from the port and starboard side, ahead of the bridge. Rio Grande was an early prototype for the alliance FB10 battleship series, and had experimental longer-range neutron beam cannons mounted for her main battery. These longer-range cannons required a lengthened hull, making her almost 100 meters longer than a standard FB10 series flagship. (OACE)

Apocrypha
In its appearance in DNT: 'The Verge of Death (Part One)' (pictured above captioned "Starboard rear"), the name and pennant number of the Rio Grande has been mirrored so as to appear backwards. This is not the case in the subsequent episode.
