Heya, just a headsup re: policy talk. Iracundus is doing an absolutely ridiculous (and laudatory) number of blocking of spam accounts. Think its time to implement stricter procedures. Vympel 13:57, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Heya - http://gineipaedia.com/wiki/Imperial_fast_battleship_%28788_UC_era%29 - refuses to appear in the relevant category. Very strange. Vympel 01:19, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hey there! Looks like it was just missing the closing

Promotion
Given all the work that's been put into this place it would be a shame if hardly anyone even in the LOGH community is aware of it. Do you think it possible to get this place linked from the Wikipedia entry given that a new fan might try to google and Wikipedia is still the first result that pops up? Also, it is my understanding that "/a/" has a significant LOGH fanbase. Is there anyone that might be a better salesperson/promoter that can spread the word? Iracundus 16:32, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've added a question just now on the talk page for Wikipedia's LOGH article to ask if it'd be appropriate to add a link to us.
- Canary is a regular of /m and has done pretty well to promote us there, but i'm not sure if he visits /a. I stopped going to 4chan a few years ago so i don't know if i'd be good for that sort of thing. Historically it seems like Vympel has done the most to gain us new contributors. :p
- By the way, on the 7th we reached our highest number of single-day visitors to date, with exactly 200 unique visits. (125 of those came from Google.) ♥ kine @ 22:06, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Ongoing vandalism problem
I'm thinking we should change the editing so that only registered users can edit pages (i.e. you have to log in to edit something). I think this may cut down on all the bullshit we've been getting lately. Vympel 00:18, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- Hey. Sorry about my negligence again. :/
- I didn't want it to come to that, because i'd wanted to make sure we'd get as many editors as possible, but i suppose if it's becoming a problem that is something to consider. If anyone else sees this (Canary, Iracundus, Glacierfairy, anyone) — let me know what you think. I'll go the way the majority wants to. ♥ kine @ 00:45, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't mind if it cuts down on the vandalism. Though 24.139.148.122 needs to register then to contribute. Also at least some of the vandalism was by the same person, inserting more subtle misinformation into the articles rather than just outright gibberish, which suggests it is either someone who does know some things about the universe and is pursuing some sort of vendetta or that it is a particularly attentive random vandal.
- Yeah, one of the reasons I thought about this was precisely because I think 24.139.148.122 should register to contribute - chiefly because its odd asking people to do things (like adding citations!) when they don't have a username and an associated talk page. And yeah, we would get rid of that persistent how shall I say ... distorter ... of the same pages with the same old nonsense over and over. Vympel 11:44, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think it will be so easy. As long as their IP changes, they can just keep re-creating new accounts over and over. It'll have a minimal effect I think. But since you both agree, i will make the change the next time i mess with the server (won't be immediately though) ♥ kine @ 22:06, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- I've set it so that unregistered users can't edit. Let me know if this causes any unexpected issues ♥ kine @ 01:01, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- So far so good. No problems at my side =) Glacierfairy 14:05, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Citation template for Retriever?
Heya, is there one for this arc? Found I needed it for the cruiser entry. Vympel 08:03, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think there is one, no. Real-life obligations are taking up some of my time lately so i might be a little lax on fixing stuff like this, but if you just do it like we've been doing for the others (put like
{{ret|2}}
or whatever) it'll automatically update when i do eventually get around to it. I'll add it to my list :) ♥ kine @ 00:45, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

Images
Something I've been meaning to ask--is there a way to access all of the uploaded images at Gineipaedia? An image database, for lack of a better term? Something brows-able? I'm trying to find some good pictures for the Galactic Empire page, but would just as soon use stuff that's already been uploaded. Might also be a cool thing to stick on the sidebar or somewhere for visitors who are just dinking about. Canary 15:01, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, there are two ways to go about it:
- The ideal method is to browse through the Images category. However, some of the images we have are not categorised properly (including a few of my own), either because we don't yet have a good category created for them or because it wasn't a priority, so they won't all be there. (Most of the screenshots that i personally had uploaded are there, though)
- The other way is through Special:ListFiles, which contains every file on the site. However, it is less intuitive than the Images category (and doesn't show thumb-nails). ♥ kine @ 15:24, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Citations
Either the template isn't working fully for citing Spiral Labyrinth episodes, or I don't know how to cite them. Since they appear to be working halfway, I'm assuming there's something with the template that needs to be tweaked since, until today, we didn't have pages for the individual episodes. I don't know how to do that...so I'll leave it to you. Canary 08:02, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, i'm sorry, i've only created the title templates for the first three episodes. They'll start working as soon as i create them (which i will try to do in a bit). Just keep doing like you've been doing in the mean time, they'll eventually look right ♥ kine @ 08:05, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I've noticed a number of "Name Variations" have "Japanese Fan Sources" listed as a source... and then that name being the one used on the page. This strikes me as incorrect for two reasons: first, fan sources should be the last place we take the official name for. If a character doesn't have a Japanese version of his or her name, there's no reason to include the parenthetical at all. Secondly, "Fan Sources" is too nebulous a term for a source. I'd say... either be specific to the source, or not at all. Example: Wikipedia (Japan), _____.net (Fansite), etc., etc. Canary 23:56, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hm, which are you referring to? I know the cat is like that, but that's only because i don't know where his name really comes from (and it's not mentioned in Wikipedia, it's just mentioned in one-off Japanese fan sites). What others are like that?
- (Generally speaking though, i obviously agree that fan sources should be the last place we look. If there are any situations where i've used a fan name over a DVD/LD one, it's probably by mistake. Unless you're only referring to the 'Japanese:' thing at the top...) ♥ kine @ 00:52, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've simply been putting 'Japanese fan sources' in ship name variations for the proper English name, when applicable. I get them from that website with the side-view .gifs of the ships (another one before that). That's probably what Canary's referring to? I didn't start that trend, though. Vympel 01:15, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hm, i saw one or two like that but i can't think of how they were used specifically. My position on that is this: If a vessel or character has no name in the anime, but a name exists within the manga, the novels, a licensed work (book/model/game), or even in some cases fan sites, then i think we should use it to name our article. (That will prevent having heaps of unnamed articles.)
- However, we do NOT need to use a fan source's English name (except for in 'name variations'). For example, you mentioned that the Fleet File books name some of the unnamed ships in the series, but they don't use English names. If that's the case, we should be translating the names. If a Japanese fan source includes an English name, that's fine, but if their translation does not match ours i would say ours wins.
- I don't know, maybe you're already doing that, or maybe the Japanese fan translations have always been correct so it never came up, but that's my thinking. If the fan translations aren't correct, there's no need to be limited to them, because they have no official status ♥ kine @ 01:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah the Japanese fan translations of ship names, like Langenberg, Watzmann, Grendel and Morholt are all IMO pretty clearly correct, so it hasn't come up. Of course ... how does one define correct? Putting the original Japanese into google translate for *some* of these gives us nonsense phoentics - I'd much rather follow the fan names that make sense and actually have clear applicability than putting for example RANGENBERGERU! into the wiki :) Vympel 01:47, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, to elaborate - in the case of Langenberg, I translated it myself on SDN with help of others who pointed me in the right direction. On google translate it comes out as a mess, but realising the whole letter L / letter R thing with Japanese, it was pretty easy to figure out it was Langenberg. Then I found the fan site which confirmed it. Same with Morholt - it comes out as a mess, but then I grabbed that mess and did a google search, and found it was talking about the character in Tristan & Isolde. By contrast, Grendel IIRC translates through google perfect. But I've never ever seen that .gif page to be wrong on names.Vympel 01:51, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- I'd say if they're not wrong then we're pretty good, no worries. As far as finding what's correct, if you ever have any issues with that, here's the easiest thing you can do:
- 1. Go to Google and search for: "<JAPANESE SHIT>" site:ja.wikipedia.org
- 2. Find a result that has that Japanese term in its title, and click on it
- 3. In the side-bar on the left, find the link that says 'English', and click it if it has one
- 4. Boom, English translation
- (Otherwise you can always ask me or Canary, if your other sources fail you) ♥ kine @ 02:02, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- The page I had in mind, specifically, was E.J. Mackenzie. The big problem I had less about using the "Japanese Fan Source" version for the name, and more about the fact that something so vague and nebulous as "Japanese Fan Sources" (or "English Fan Sources" for that matter are being used at all. When it comes to citations, specificity is necessary. Canary 04:18, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- Well, this 'system' has sort of evolved in my mind over the course of time, and i guess these were my thoughts during that process:
- 1. These are provided for two reasons: (1) to help search engines index our pages better, and (2) to provide an aid to the reader in case they are confused about names or in case they want to do further research. In that sense, these are not facts, in my mind, in the same way that the official names are facts. They don't do anything for our articles except for those two things, they have no bearing on anything else.
- 2. In the specific case of E.J. Mackenzie you could put 'Wikipedia' as a source, but suppose it's a situation like kitty, where there is no significant source, it's just found in random places. How do you decide who gets the credit for it? And once you do decide, then what? Are you going to list the name of a Web site that 95% of our readers won't understand, and therefore won't be useful to them? Or are we going to have to provide external links on every single page to prove that these terms are being used somewhere in the world?
- I guess those were my two biggest thoughts on the subject. I felt like since the information is not used anywhere else in our articles, you could sort of consider them 'analyses' in the same way we have dozens of unsourced analyses in 'Background information' sections all over the site, and leave it to the reader to copy and paste the term into Google and find their sources. But... if you feel strongly about it, let me know what you think would be a consistent and equitable system, and i can address it ♥ kine @ 04:50, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Image mashups
I like what you did with the Asgrimm DVD/laserdisc discrepancy- I can think of other times when I might want to use that, how do you make them? Vympel 01:39, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, ty. It's nothing fancy, i just set them side-by-side in Photoshop. (Image > Canvas size, click the left or right side, set width to 1280) You could do the same in Paint or GIMP or whatever ♥ kine @ 02:08, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Ah k. I don't have photoshop - paint sort of ruins images though, doesn't it? I'll give it a go. If it doesn't work, I'll ask you for help :) Vympel 02:50, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Paint does ruin JPEGs, yes. Or at least it did on XP — i've never tried on Windows 7 (the only Windows PC i have is a netbook, which i obv don't do much graphics work on). If you like, you can do one of two things:
- 1. Download Paint.NET, which takes a little getting used to, but is free and i think does a better job with JPEGs.
- 2. Just save them in Paint as PNGs instead of JPEGs, and then upload them here — someone (probably me) will convert them to JPEG. (To make them the right size on XP you would go to like Image > Image Attributes; not sure where they've moved that on W7)
- Edit: Oh, or of course you could just upload the two separate images and ask me or someone else to combine them for you ♥ kine @ 02:54, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks mate, I'll do that. Vympel 09:21, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Fleet File booklets
http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/6577/page04i.jpg
That's from the booklet for Vol.1R. I wanted to be absolutely sure about something - the figure 1,171 is for crew, right? What do the symbols mean, exactly? Especially the symbol after the number?Vympel 09:21, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- It is. '乗員' means crew, and '数' means number or amount. The '名' at the end is a symbol used when giving a count of people (you could translate it as '### people', or just leave it out, depending on context) ♥ kine @ 09:30, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks dude. I wonder if those crew figures include ground troops and what not. Because the casualty figures for most battles support an average crew size of ~120 men or so per ship (e.g. Black Lancers at the Corridor had 15,900 ships, and 1,908,000 men = 120 men per ship on average . Of course, fleets also include lots of destroyers (Eihendorf's fleet in Ep 27 was 50% destroyers), which are much smaller than the other ships and would have a much smaller crew. Wish we knew the crew figures for destroyers. Vympel 09:39, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Not sure. I've just checked the two books i have, and the Japanese Wikipedia, but none of them list numbers for FPA or Imperial destroyers. :/ ♥ kine @ 09:50, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Hey mate, need your translation skills again:-
https://rapidshare.com/files/730759165/Nurnburg.pdf (the office scanner does things in .pdf)
Note the crew section for the Nurnburg doesn't have a number. What do those characters mean? Thanks mate. Vympel 00:05, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- '不明' means, rather unhelpfully, 'unknown'. :/ ♥ kine @ 00:14, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Wow. That is weird, isn't it? "What do you mean, unknown?!" I guess that sort of implies that whoever's writing the booklets for Wright Staff is working from info from elsewhere, and none was ever given for Nurnburg, so they decided to be honest and just say they didn't know. Better that than just making shit up I suppose. Vympel 00:20, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, that seems like the logical choice. It would bizarre if that weren't the case, and they just decided arbitrarily to exclude it... ♥ kine @ 00:21, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- Given the sketches/concept art that appears in the booklets, I wonder if they're working from the original Artland files. (that was the outfit that did LOGH, IIRC). Oh well. Will find out one day when I get them fully translated! Thanks mate. I can do Nurnburg now. Vympel 00:26, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Images - Gallery?
Just wondering - is there code to put a gallery box, like used in MA? In terms of the ships, I think it'd be highly useful - we can have pictures of as many different angles as needed (for example, get a look at the rear end, or the ship in total profile, or from above, etc). This is especially so when I tried to grab a good picture of the Kücrain to do an entry on it - no one picture does the ship justice - its either close and detailed, but cut off, or too far away, or not taking up enough of the screen. Same with the Nürnberg, actually. Vympel 14:19, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- There is, and i think that's a good idea! You can see an example on Neue Sanssouci, i'd probably borrow the same format (widths and things) from there ♥ kine @ 14:43, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- Great, I'll proceed! Vympel 00:16, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Deploy Rudolf von Goldenbot! (re: Marr-Adetta)
For some reason, the spelling of Marr-Adetta is wrong in a lot of places. Its spelt "Mar-Adetta" but according to both LD and DVD, its Marr-Adetta. I'm guilty of a lot of this myself. Vympel 11:15, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

- FYI, got this done now. Corrected
/ma[lr]+.?a[d]+e[t]+a/i
toMarr-Adetta
. Fixed most of the article titles also, plus the name templates. Let me know if you find any others.
- PS: We still need articles for Marr-Adetta Starzone and Marr-Adetta (star)
- PPS: I noticed that the LD/DVD subtitles call it '"Marr-Adetta" system' but the episode title calls it 'Marr-Adetta Starzone'. Another point to add to our system/starzone mystery... ♥ kine @ 07:24, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
List of FPA characters which haven't included yet in Gineipaedia
As promised, here's the list of the FPA characters which I found that haven't included in Gineipaedia pages. Well, plus my rather obsolete self-intro... but it also contains about my thoughts about the sub re-editing with correctly spelled names, why I'm crazy about LOGH, my various languages skill for your reference, and stuffs. Feel free to share the link with the other admins, maybe just for laugh or something :p
Hope it helps, or at least it'll add more new pages. Message me if you can't open the link, I know FB sucks. I'm looking forward for the spelling correction, background info, and such, of course when it's applicable. Cya. I'll report back with list of Galactic Empire characters after I finish reading all 203 pages here.
Cheers. :) — 3island18, 15 March 2013
- Welcome. It is good to see a new member, as opposed to those spam account creators. Some of the characters you listed, such as Sále Aziz Cheikly (mentioned in the list of specific Spartanian craft) are known but pages haven't been made yet for them. Due to the sheer number of characters, many minor characters still lack pages or need more fleshing out and organization to link them to other pages. You are welcome to create or work on these pages. If your Japanese reading is good, one thing that would be of great assistance would be translation of the various Fleet File write-ups to ensure things and details are accurate. Iracundus 00:11, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- I don't have a Facebook account, so i can't view your link. However, to expand on what Iracundus said — we have a lot of articles that are 'known missing' for various reasons. At one point i had gone through and created at least a basic article (photo, infobox, &c.) for every named character i could find, but it's a long series so of course i missed a lot.
- Additionally, there are many characters who never actually appear on-screen (or only appear in the Gaiden, which i still haven't completed), and i didn't want to have a bunch of stub articles that didn't even have pictures, so i didn't add those. If i wanted to, i could have my bot go through and create stubs for literally hundreds or perhaps thousands of topics, but i don't want to give people the impression that our content is lacking. I would like people to be able to (for example) click through random articles and at least have a strong idea of what the article is describing, even if it's not complete.
- In any case, the following pages will give you an idea of our 'known missing' articles:
- Special:WantedPages
- Feature:Deaths
- User:Kine/DVD_names
- User:Kine/CA_DVD_names
- User:Kine/Blu-ray_names

Hi, thanks for the warm welcome and the links up there, they really help a lot for tracking names. And I'm sorry for the 4 tildes thing. Is this added when I add a new topic on someone talkpage or add/edit existing talk page, like this one now? And how? Sign my name? Type 4 tildes before 3island18 in the end of the writing I just add? Sorry for being a noob @_@
Sále Aziz Cheikly is... Shakely in CA subs, right? Is that a French name or... but Aziz sounds Arabic or something. I do found some names mentioned in other characters' page, such as Caldwell in Ivan Konev's, with red link - no page. Well, I guess I'll just have to keep reading all the pages in Gineipaedia here, 1102 pages now, I'll find those names eventually, somewhere. I'm now progressing so slowly reading the Galactic Empire's character pages, mostly because I'm trying to check each name with Wikipedia (English and German) and Google to see how correct the name is, which spelling is the most correct or common (not to mention my internet was being dead 2 days ago without any explanation...). This consumed my time very much though LOL. After I reached the characters with name starts with E, I decided to stop doing this, and aim to concentrate on finishing read all Gineipaedia pages as my 1st priority. After I collect everything I could, I'll do the crosschecking stuff later. I thought I should've at least try to correct some typos in the pages I've read so far, or fix things, but since I've read so far now, I decided to not touch anything in this Wiki since it's not mine anyway :p For now, I'll just concentrate on the sub-reediting stuff, which god knows when it'll be finished ever LOL. The 1st phase of name collecting is progressing so ever slowly now :p I've been naive, it started as an idea after I read a couple of Gineipaedia pages, "wouldn't it great if the subs are tidied up and using the correctly spelled names from Gineipaedia", I thought it'll be easy to do it. Yet there are obstacles such as lack of data (at first, I thought just steal from Gineipaedia and all is wrapped :p), laziness, and my overly perfectionist self :p Will the new subs ever see the day? For now, my focus is all about the subs of the anime itself, as to me, LOGH is all about, well, watching the anime itself, the main source - entertainment - story. Of the anime subs, for the anime subs, by the anime subs. Until the subs itself are perfect in some certain degree, I'll stay unrest :p My aim is every name ever mentioned in the subs, even those who never actually appear on-screen ie. only mentioned by some character, are at least real/plausible ones, not some ugly lazy transliteration from Katakana or Japanese voice actor/actress poor pronunciation. It's like an unfinished business. Maybe I dream too much. In the mean time, I'll just keep reading Gineipaedia pages~~ In the end, I dunno will I be much of help to this Wiki though >_< But I promise to hunt typos on pages and upload pics for the pages which don't have it later, ideally when I finally finish collecting, checking, and making a perfect list, final ver., of the "correctly spelled names", which will be used in the final subs, no more argument or re-checking, give myself a closure of this matter, get over with it and continue with my life. Yeah, I think I will do this when I enter the next phase, which is, actually editing and re-time the subs. That's a good time for producing some screenshots.
Btw, about Facebook, you can't see the content of the link above? I've set it to public view. Oh well, FB sucks anyway. Any recommendation of website to put text articles in it? I thought I've heard.. umm.. damn.. I forgot the site name, it's usually for people write notes, download links, serial numbers, etc. Or I could just copy and paste it in your LOGH forum if you don't mind with it, under the thread which I created (saying hi and stuff) preferably. At least it's better stuck forever on a LOGH related site than some random FB public page. And I hope it'll serve some use as reference or something, yaknow, when someone decides to add what's still missing and stuffs. 3island18 01:22, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- I can read Facebook so your stuff there was all noted. Any assistance you can offer is appreciated. The task of compiling the minor characters is an immense task. The subs I am using are the DVD release ones. What is annoying of course is that in fixing some of the subs from the first release, they added errors even as they fixed other errors. Yes, Aziz is Arabic sounding and the character is dark skinned which matches perfectly. Iracundus 08:44, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- (so racist)
- I think Cheikly is intended to be Berber/Moroccan, with a correct Arabic spelling of شكري (usually transliterated as Choukri).
- Feel free to correct any errors you find, but since you are already doing a lot of reading anyway, please take note of our policies. In particular, our policy regarding names is that we use the names provided by the official Blu-ray, DVD, or LD subtitles when they are available, even if they are obviously not transliterated correctly — we only use the 'correct' names (the ones we've transliterated ourselves) when no Romanised spelling has been provided in the official media.
- However, i have made sure to include my research and the possible other transliterations, where applicable, at the bottom of each article under 'Name variations' and 'Background information' — i think the others have generally been doing this as well. ♥ kine @ 11:57, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Wow, thanks for the Shakely explanation. Honestly I even already forgot how is the guy look like :p Need to re-watch. I'm somewhat familiar with Arabic name, well, just a little. I think that Sále is written as Saleh in my country, means, religious or something. So the correct spelling could be like Saleh Aziz Choukri, will crosscheck this with Wiki later. I would never know about Choukri without you, Kine :) Actually, I only need the Choukri part. In the anime, this guy name is never mentioned in full, and only mentioned by his pilot fellows like... once on LOGH (not sure if he got his own nameplate sub), and once on HBSHBL and that's on credits... (CA being generous writing in his name since they know the voice actor name). Someone should make a new page for Choukri and put in the precious background info up there (this one -> شكري)LOL.
Yeah, I do agree that you guys did exceptionally well on the background info of the names esp. the FPA ones which are far more diverse in nationality/ethnicity/cultural backgrounds, than the Empire ones (all German -> Eng&Ger Wiki + Google, I think I can do it somehow?). I'm thinking of, after I done making all the list, if you allow me to, I'll create a thread in the forum where I give out the list and we'll discuss the names together (10 names per day maybe), which spelling/transliteration is the most correct. Yea, I can't do this alone by myself, I need expert opinions from someone who is knowledgeable on this stuff, like Kine and others. I only know Chinese (standard Hànyǔ Pīnyīn romanisation and stuffs) and Japanese (and there are only like, two in LOGH with easy pronunciation, Murai and Hazuki... hmm, Eda?) :/ At the very least the forum will regain some life? LOL And of corz Gineipaedia can use everything discussed there if it's useful. But I'm sorry that I will waste some of your precious time with me though. Hope you don't mind.
Honestly I'm still wavering between using the correct spelling of names which the Japanese mistranslated or... take in the Katakana reading into account, and accept the slightly changed spelling, coz it's a name for a fictional character anyway, it's like an homage. Peenemünde or Beenemünde, Lohengramm or Lohengrin, Treurnicht or Trünicht...
Okay, I'll resume my reading now. Oh and from now on, I will clean up the typos of the pages as I read on. Killing two birds with one stone. That's the best way I can do for Gineipaedia right now coz I'm a noob in Wiki stuff :) Don't worry, I won't touch and mess up the names. I read the policy a long time ago the 1st time I found this site. Latest BluRay subs owns DVD, LD, etc. Got it.
I've created a new thread on the forum containing the self-intro & the list with them fancy colors. Keep it on, guys. Glad to see that everyday there are updates on various pages no matter how small they are. Gineipaedia is still alive and well :) 3island18 02:42, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Attempted registration
Hey kine, got a message from someone on SDN that they're trying to register and can't. Extract follows:
"Hey there,
I tried registering at the wiki a few days ago. I believe there's a number of things I could bring to the table. Unfortunately it looks like the wiki doesn't really want to let me register. Trying to send a registration, all I get is a message telling me that I'm not allowed because my IP address is listed as an open proxy in the DNSBL. It should be [redacted], but it didn't work from my iPhone either, which is on another IP entirely. Is that something you could fix for me?
Thanks in advance,"
Any ideas? Cheers Vympel 11:59, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- Hey there! It seems like our captcha questions are doing most of the anti-spam work for us, so for now i've just disabled the DNSBL checks. Could you please let your bud know that they should be able to try again? Also, let me know if you notice any ill effects like increased spam. ♥ kine @ 18:41, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- That'd be me. It got through now. I checked the log and it says the last account registration was back in October '14, so I figured it had something to do with security settings rather than my IP in particular. In any case, thanks for the quick response. I hope to contribute a number of things, so you'll probably see me around. Apologies for the wonderfully uninspired username. ;P Gingaeiyu 19:14, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
- No problem. Thanks for registering, enjoy your stay! ♥ kine @ 19:17, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Logos
Hey, new user here. Hopefully I'm using this message thing correctly...
Anyway, I've been working on some LotGH logos and was wondering if they'd be useful here. I want to run them by staff members first to see if they are accurate in design, color, font, etc. Here's a near finished "Free Planets Star Fleet" logo: http://i.imgur.com/T79W7Jz.png Heinessen Hero 21:11, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- Hello! Nice to have you here. The logo looks great, i like it!
- I don't think we have a specific policy regarding the use of custom graphics on the site — i know i made some rank insignia for the Alliance military ranks article, and there are flags/crests others have uploaded for a few articles elsewhere, but those were just kind of arbitrary one-off things. So i do think we should make an administrative decision as far as whether, for example, such an image could be used at the top of an article, and we should write that decision down. But other than that, i think images like that would be very useful and appreciated here.
- Other admins, do you have any thoughts on what our policy should be regarding custom images? My main concerns are (a) i want them to be high-quality (which this logo is), and (b) i don't want the wiki to become a repository for fan-made character art and things like that.
- @Heinessen Hero, if you do upload any images to the wiki, please make sure you document the licence that governs how we're allowed to use them. Feel free also to put any authorship information you deem appropriate at the bottom of the image description. ♥ kine @ 21:26, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
- I agree with both of your concerns, and regarding custom images in here, I'd say it is better to allow them strictly on a supplementary basis, to cover the gaps that cannot be adequately filled by the source material (like flags and crests). Ensuring their qualities would be really tricky though. Glacierfairy 01:38, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- As far as my images are concerned, I just want:
- To be credited for my work.
- No modifications (I'll take care of that based on discussions).
- No one trying to make money off of them. These are free and for the fans. I originally had these in mind for cosplayers, but I figured maybe you guys could use them too.
- Whatever images are approved will be here. All of my work will be on my Twitter and imgur pages as well. Currently, I have no plans to use them elsewhere.
- I'm making various logos in Illustrator. I'm using scans (from official art books) and screen shots from the OVA to make these. I'm trying to make them as accurate as possible. That's why I want various opinions on quality/accuracy. I'll be making various versions and see what you guys think. I noticed that the books and OVA don't always match up.
- What I have done so far:
- FPA Pentagon (OVA style, official website style). Might make another version that resembles the Cospa FPA flag.
- FPA Flag (OVA style). Might make another version that resembles the Cospa FPA flag.
- Free Planets Star Fleet. There's a chest (yellow) and shoulder (orange) version.
- Free Planets 13th Star Fleet.
- What I want to do:
- Goldenbaum crest. Which means I can easily make the flag and Phezzan flag.
- Goldenlowe crest. I can easily make the flag afterward.
- Yang Fleet patch. I know this would be helpful for Yang cosplayers.
- The Rosen Ritter, EL Facil, and IRGF velcro patches are currently up for pre-order on AmiAmi, so these designs won't be a top priority. The ones I haven't finished are quite detailed, so they may take me time to finish. Heinessen Hero 03:01, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
- That sounds good. You can consider yourself approved to upload any such images you like, i don't think there'll be an issue. We'll find a use for them i'm sure. If you'd like to get opinions on the direction of an image, i would suggest posting a link on your talk page with a summary like 'opinions wanted', so people can find it in the change log. You can also ping me here if nobody responds (or if you have any other questions/concerns).
- Regarding your usage restrictions, it sounds like you may want to consider CC-BY-NC-ND, which allows non-commercial use of the images in different formats (like printing them out) but doesn't allow people to otherwise transform/remix them except for personal use. If you decide you like that, please make an annotation to that effect when you upload the image. ♥ kine @ 08:44, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. I'll try and get an imgur gallery linked up in my talk page soon. Heinessen Hero 05:23, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
I got a small gallery up on my talk page. Send some opinions my way when you can. Heinessen Hero 05:34, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Email confirmation problem
Hey kine,
Looks like there's some sort of confirmation problem with emails. Following user just registered: "Email Confirmation Is Still Broken And The Wiki Forums No Longer Exist So This Is The Only Way I Can See To Bring Attention To The Problem. Maybe Your Anti-Spam Measures Are Too Strong If They Prevent Actual People From Editing.; Looking At The User Creation Log It Appears That No One Who Created An Account After December 2019 Has Been Able to Edit. Possibly Due To This Email Confirmation Problem." Vympel 14:07, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
- Wow, that sucks. I'm really sorry about that. I think i've been able to manually confirm everyone going back to December 2019, but i'll add an announcement on the front page, so hopefully anyone who had issues will notice and try again.
- As to the root cause, i assume it's related to Google's security restrictions, the account that sends e-mail from the wiki has to have a special 'app password' or whatever. Unfortunately i can't seem to get into the account right now; i have the password, but Google won't let me sign in because they don't recognise my browser (no shit). Whatever. I've just disabled the e-mail confirmation requirement. I never wanted to be responsible for storing people's e-mail addresses anyway, so that's fine. But it does mean the wiki can't send e-mail for anything else, either (which is why i didn't get a notification about my talk page).
- To be honest, i think we need to find someone else to handle the day-to-day management of the site. Beyond just being stagnant, it's frankly in a dangerous state and it's irresponsible for me to continue running it like this. My 'Fezzan' update project is stalled as i just don't have the energy to keep MediaWiki up to date with all of the customisations and stuff in the long term.
- Unfortunately, i don't think any of the current regulars have any experience with this kind of thing (?), and i'm not sure how we'd go about finding someone who does. Maybe we could ask on the LotGH subreddit or something? But obviously i don't want to hand the keys over to some complete stranger who might do even worse than me. That includes Wikia. Not sure what to do. I'm open to ideas. ♥ kine @ 05:16, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Place-holder names trivia!
Hey there!
I'm currently on my first watch-through of LOGH and had just come across your amusements page, specifically after googling the 'Sirius Threat' english text featured in 'To Earth'. Right after returning to the episode however, I noticed another interesting tidbit of english text myself, again seemingly pulled from some outside source, namely the list of deceased soldiers at the 13:39 mark.
I paused the episode instantly as 'Burroughs' and 'Ginsberg' are not at all common surnames, especially when paired together, and another glance down the list only confirmed my suspicion; all but one of the English names on the list are prominent Beat Generation figures, mostly novelists, poets and essayists, but a few musicians too. (The leftover name, 'Bono. H. Bono' is likely in reference to the eponymous artist, with 'Bono' being repeated as a given name to be consistent with the rest of the list, though why he's grouped in with the Beat Generation names, I couldn't say).
Two of the three Japanese names listed also turn up results when googled, both minor public figures that seemed to have been active in Japan during the timeframe of the episode's production, though this could be total coincidence, with the Japanese names being chosen at random (I'm unsure myself of how common these names would be in Japanese in the first place). This may be backed up also by the third name, 'L.A. Sayaka', as it is one that seems too generic to get any real google results. I've included links below regardless.
Lastly, there is one Italian name, an industrial musician from the 70s and 80s. All the names and relevant links follow, in chronological order:
- Jack Kerouac (Author)
- William S. Burroughs (Author)
- Gary Snyder (Essayist)
- Allen Ginsberg (Poet)
- Paul Bowles (Author)
- Gregory Corso (Poet)
- L. A. Sayaka (Unknown)
- Yoshiyuki Hayashida (Screenwriter) (Unconfirmed)
- Bono. H. Bono (Musician)
- Lew Welch (Poet)
- Maurizio Bianchi (Musician)
- Noi. S. Sawaragi (Art Critic) (Unconfirmed)
- Art Blakey (Musician)
An interesting thing to note is that the names are not listed in any real categorization, with the majority of the list being Beat Generation figures with the names of the other figures interspersed randomly between them. I can only assume they were taken from at least two separate sources as a last minute addition and simply mixed together (and maybe somebody on the team was just a big Bono fan, too!), but it's an interesting piece of trivia nonetheless. - Wow, i never noticed that. Very cool, thank you ♥ kine @ 09:00, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
Template for OACE Vol.2
Hi there, can you set up a citation template for OACE Vol. 2? I just got it in the post and have created a page for it but have no idea how to do the template. Vympel 00:47, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ok I did my best and it seems to work but the sample output template has a broken link for some reason. Documentation works fine though? Sorry for klutzing around. Vympel 11:31, 5 August 2022 (UTC)
- It looks good to me, sorry I didn't see this earlier. Hope you're well ♥ kine @ 15:32, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
