Service history
Castrop Rebellion
Flagship of the Kircheis Fleet, the Barbarossa's combat debut was in the campaign against the rebellion of Maximilian von Castrop in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE). Commanding a fleet of 5,000 ships, Rear Admiral Kircheis successfully isolated Castrop's flagship and used the Barbarossa herself to confront Castrop's ship at close range, ultimately causing Castrop's troops to mutiny. (DNT: 'The Castrop Rebellion')
Alliance-Imperial War
The Barbarossa next fought in the Imperial counterattack against the Free Planets Alliance's invasion of Imperial space in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE). Leading a fleet of over 20,000 ships, the Barbarossa oversaw the destruction of the Alliance's supply fleet, the defeat of the 7th Fleet, and the subsequent battle with the 13th Fleet. When the remnants of the Alliance fleet regrouped and faced the Imperial fleets at the Battle of Amritsar, the Barbarossa attacked the fleet from their rear at the head of 30,000 ships, using its main guns to ignite the Seffle particles dispersed on Vice Admiral Kircheis' orders, and clearing a path through the Alliance minefield. (DNT: 'The Verge of Death (Part One)', 'The Verge of Death (Part Two)', 'Amritsar')
Imperial Civil War
The Barbarossa's next campaign would be against the Lippstadt Alliance in the Imperial Civil War in 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE), leading the campaign to pacify rebel star systems whilst Reinhard von Lohengramm personally attended to the conquest of Geiersberg Fortress. In the major battle of that campaign, the Kircheis Fleet, Lutz Fleet and Wahlen Fleet fought a fleet of 50,000 enemy ships under the command of Maquis Littenheim at the Kyffhäuser Starzone. In the course of the battle, Kircheis took the Barbarossa at the head of a mere 800 ships and cut through the enemy formation, throwing the enemy fleet into confusion and causing Littenheim to retreat. (DNT: 'Tragedy')
Kircheis then took his fleet Barbarossa and reunited with Fleet Admiral Lohengramm's main force in the vicinity of Geiersberg Fortress. When the high nobles sortied in a desperate attempt to kill Reinhard von Lohengramm and save the situation, the Barbarossa spearheaded the counter-attack, cutting through the enemy fleet at close range and dismantling their advance guard. (DNT: 'Tragedy', 'The Fall of Goldenbaum')
Design
The Barbarossa's design was unlike any other Imperial ship. Along with its aggressive geometry and a bright red hull, the Barbarossa featured a large hull transparency wrapping around both the dorsal and ventral side of the prow extending towards the midships position. The transparency mounted at a pair of cannons (one each on the dorsal and ventral side of the prow) capable of firing both standard shots and significantly larger beams. Additional forward armament was mounted on a pair of canard-like structures (3 cannons each) to the port and starboard side of the prow. The Barbarossa also sported significant secondary armament about its hull and multiple missile launchers. Eighteen launch bays for Walküre fighters were arranged along its ventral hull. (DNT: 'The Verge of Death (Part Two)', 'The Fall of Goldenbaum')
