Duke Klaus von Lichtenlade (Japanese: クラウス・フォン・リヒテンラーデ) was Minister of State and acting Prime Minister of the Galactic Empire under Kaiser Friedrich IV and then briefly under Erwin Josef II. He was the effective leader of the Empire's civil service as the position and title of Prime Minister had been left vacant and taboo since the time of Otfried III.
He handled appointment of military tasks on behalf of the Kaiser. He was responsible for appointing Siegfried Kircheis to put down the Castrop Rebellion at the request of Reinhard von Lohengramm via his secretary.
Although he held the title of Marquis, as a palace courtier, Lichtenlade lacked influence and power outside the palace, or any private military force of his own, unlike the Kaiser's maternal relatives such as Duke Otho von Braunschweig or Marquis Wilhelm von Littenheim. He thus decided to back Reinhard von Lohengramm in the wake of the passing of Friedrich IV to shore up his own power, since by tradition he was supposed to have resigned upon the death of the Kaiser. His peerage was increased to Duke. The alliance with Reinhard von Lohengramm resulted in the two of them putting the deceased Crown Prince Ludwig's seven-year old son on the throne as Emperor Erwin Josef II, who was not backed by the high nobles. This alliance proved to be short-lived after Reinhard's subordinates swiftly apprehended him at the end of the Imperial Civil War for allegedly plotting against Reinhard, forcing him to commit suicide. (LOGH: 'New Trends', 'Farewell, Distant Memories')
In a further act of heinousness on Reinhard's part, he would also have all of Lichtenlade's male relatives ages 10 and above executed. (LOGH: 'Farewell, Distant Memories')
