Mückenberger was considered to be a competent leader and became one of the first Imperial elites to acknowledge the capabilities of Reinhard von Lohengramm. He decided to retire shortly after the death of Kaiser Friedrich IV and just before the outbreak of the civil war in the Empire, refusing overtures from the nobility of the Lippstadt League to support them.

He was the son of Vice Admiral Wilhelm von Mückenberger and his wife, Wilhelmina von Mückenberger.

History

Early life

A young Gregor with his mother Wilhelmina

Gregor was the son of Imperial Vice Admiral Wilhelm von Mückenberger and his wife Wlhelmina von Mückenberger; Wilhelm was killed in action during the Second Battle of Tiamat by the Free Planets Star Fleet under Bruce Ashbey. In his dying moments, Wilhelm stated he wanted his wife to raise Gregor to be a noble military man and take revenge upon the Free Planets Alliance. Gregor would ultimately follow in his father's footsteps and rise to an even higher rank than the elder Mückenberger ever did. (SL: 'The Man Loved by the Goddess of Time: Chronicle of the Second Battle of Tiamat, Part I')

Military career

By 794 UC (485 IC / 3594 CE) Gregor had risen to the highest office in the armed forces, that of Chief Space Fleet Commander. By the time of the late Goldenbaum Dynasty, Fleet Admiral Mückenberger was considered to be a capable officer and was respected by the high nobles due to his noble birth. He commanded Imperial forces during the Battle of Van-Fleet, Sixth Battle of Iserlohn, and Third Battle of Tiamat, the latter of which occurred as an offensive to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the coronation of Kaiser Friedrich IV. He was later present at the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, in which he tried to get the young Reinhard von Lohengramm sacrificed by sending him agaisnt the enemy by himself, completely exposed. However, Reinhard managed to not only survive but played a major role in defeating the enemy forces. Mückenberger and the other two military chiefs (796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE))

As the space fleet commander, Mückenberger was the one who initially had to work with the young Reinhard von Lohengramm as he rose through the ranks of the Fleet. At first he reacted with skepticism and disrespect, believing as the high nobles did that the blond officer only got promoted due to his sister's relationship with the Kaiser. For his part, Reinhard viewed Mückenberger as only having the appearance of dignity and competence, while being just as hidebound and unimaginative as the rest of the nobles and Imperial officer corps, based on his flustered reaction to Alliance tactics during the Sixth Battle of Iserlohn, the Third Battle of Tiamat, and the Fourth Battle of Tiamat. Mückenberger ended up changing his mind in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE) after Reinhard's victory the Battle of Astarte. Mückenberger noted his accomplishment in a conversation with High Admiral Ovlesser by saying that even the brilliant Willibald Joachim von Merkatz was impressed. In 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE), when Iserlohn Fortress had fallen to Admiral Yang Wen-li of the Alliance, Mückenberger, Ehrenberg and Steinhof were held accountable by the Kaiser and only Reinhard's request for mercy towards the three military chiefs allowed them to keep their positions. After that point the veteran fleet admiral began to realize Reinhard's talents and by the time that the younger officer managed to fight off the invasion attempt by the Free Planets Alliance he came to respect him. Retirement and legacy

Mückenberger (794 UC (485 IC / 3594 CE))

Thus upon the emperor's death shortly after the invasion, the space fleet commander chose to go into retirement quietly rather than get caught up in the inevitable power struggle between Reinhard and the nobility. He rejected the request of Duke Otto von Braunschweig and Marquis Wilhelm von Littenheim to join their Lippstadt League and support them against the axis of Fleet Admiral Lohengramm and Minister of State Klaus von Lichtenlade. He handed his position peacefully to Reinhard and ended up becoming one of the few high ranking Goldenbaum officials to not get punished in some way. (LOGH: 'New Trends')
