History
Little is known about Caldwell's early life and career, although it could be inferred that he was part of the Yang Fleet since its inception in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE). By 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), he became skilled enough to be appointed as the vice chief of the 2nd Aerial Corps under Ivan Konev. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Vermilion (Part Two)')
In April 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), Caldwell participated in the Battle of Vermilion where he succeeded Konev as chief of the 2nd Aerial Corps when the latter was killed in action after being hit by an Imperial cruiser's main cannons. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Vermilion (Part Two)')
After the end of the Battle of Vermilion, Caldwell joined with Willibald Joachim von Merkatz's secret resistance force and served in its Spartanian squadron led by Oliver Poplin as his second-in-command. When Poplin departed to Terra with Julian Mintz in June 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), he became the squadron's acting commander. (LOGH: 'After the Ceremony, the Curtain Rises Again...')
In August 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), the Yang Irregulars was established and in his capacity as Spartanian squadron commander, Caldwell became involved in its high level staff meetings. This would remain the case as the Yang Irregulars transited into the El Facil Revolutionary Reserve Force, and later, the Iserlohn Republic Government Force. (LOGH: 'To El Facil')
