For years, Costea had been embezzling camp funds to a secret account in Fezzan. When Yang Wen-li was transferred to the camp in November of 788 UC (479 IC / 3588 CE), Costea feared that he was under secret orders to investigate Costea's wrongdoings.
Prior to his assignment on Econia, Costea served under Alliance hero Frederick Jasper during the Second Battle of Tiamat. Jasper himself met with and made a deep impression upon the young Costea and became his personal hero, so much that, decades later, he had a large portrait of 'March' Jasper in his office. (SL: 'Planet POW Camp')
Costea enlisted the aid of an Imperial prisoner named Presberg, promising him an early return to his home in the Empire, and orchestrated a prison riot. Costea quickly manoeuvred Yang into the prisoners' hands as a hostage, whom he intended to kill, along with Fyodor Patrichev, whom Costea intended to make the scapegoat for his crimes. Yang and Patrichev survived Costea's trap, and removed him from command. When Murai arrived at Econia to investigate the situation, Presberg testified against Costea, and he was placed under arrest. When Costea protested, Murai revealed that he had already found out about his secret account. Not long after, Costea was court-martialed and presumably sent to prison. (SL: 'Prisoners and Hostages', 'A Rebellion of Microscopic Size', 'The Hero of Econia')
Costea is a Romanian variant of the name Constantine.
