The Maurya (Japanese: マウリア) was the Alliance flagship of Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Huu.

Service history

The Maurya served as a squadron flagship, joining the Yang Fleet at its formation in late 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE). Its first engagement following this was at the Battle of Doria Starzone, where Commodore Nguyen's squadron was instrumental in cutting the 11th Fleet's formation in two. By 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE), the Maurya had been repainted with a distinctive 'tiger-stripe' livery, and it defended Iserlohn Fortress at the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn. Following the Alliance victory, Rear Admirals Nguyen and Alarcon led their respective fleets in pursuit of the withdrawing Imperial forces, intending to eliminate the few remaining ships. However, both fleets were destroyed by Imperial reinforcements — the Maurya itself was sunk by the Reuenthal Fleet. (LOGH: 'Determination and Ambition')

Background information

The name Maurya refers to the ancient Indian dynasty of the same name.

Licensed Sources

The Maurya was one of a small number of Ajax class flagships built for squadron command. During construction, input from Nguyen and his staff was incorporated. The armament consisted of a standard Ajax class weapon module, fitted with 32 large calibre long range cannons. Each side of the ship had 35 medium range beam cannons, compared to the usual 20 of other Ajax class ships.

The ship was fitted for high acceleration with an Ajax class engine module but with a new engine design with up to 20% greater propellant intake. Naturally this resulted also in increased propellant consumption so the ventral hull was fitted with a large rectangular propellant tank, containing pure water. Its volume was equivalent to 50 of the standard cylindrical pure water propellant tanks fitted to standard Alliance battleships. This tank could be switched out for another tank for quick replenishment.

Iserlohn Fortress was capable of purifying 2,220,000 cubic metres of water per day for use as propellant, but even so, the propellant needs of this ship placed a burden on the system.

In fact, during the Alliance invasion of the Empire, the Maurya did not enter the Empire and instead was held back in command of 80 other ships as a garrison force for Iserlohn Fortress and the Iserlohn Corridor. This was due to the difficulty of maintaining adequate supply lines to support its high propellant consumption.

With its focus on close range combat, the Maurya was equipped with a complement of 36 Spartanian fighters and was equipped to fully support fighter operations. Like a full carrier, its tactical computer maintained a direct link with Spartanian fighters through a laser, enabling frequent navigational and tactical information updates. • December 788 UC (479 IC / 3588 CE) — Work completed at Heinessen Shipyard 1
• 1 January 789 UC (480 IC / 3589 CE) — Inducted as flagship of the 3rd Border System squadron
• May 795 UC (486 IC / 3595 CE) — First refit. Strengthening of defensive shields over the midsection
• 15 March 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE) — Inducted into the 13th Fleet
