Service history

The Shiva was first observed as part of the independent fleet of High Admiral Merkatz, leading the operation to seize Alliance ships slated for dismantlement under the Treaty of Ba‘alat in 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE). (LOGH: 'The Magician Is Captured')

When the fleet came under overall command of Fleet Admiral Yang Wen-li, eventually becoming the El Facil Revolutionary Reserve Force, the Shiva was the lead ship in the recapture of Iserlohn Fortress in 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE). In particular, the Shiva executed a rapid insertion of Alliance troops into Iserlohn's docking bays, sustaining superficial damage in the process. (LOGH: 'The Prodigal Sons Come Home')

The Shiva then served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Fischer's squadron in the EFRRF, fighting in the Battle of the Corridor. On 14 May 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE), at approximately 17:45, the Shiva was destroyed during an attack by High Admiral Bittenfeld's Black Lancers, and Vice Admiral Fischer was killed. (LOGH: 'The Battle of the Corridor: End of the Campaign')

The Shiva was built using one of the 3 original prototype hulls of the Ajax class flagships.

In early 780 UC (471 IC / 3580 CE), it was decided to conduct a study to weigh the costs versus benefits of operating fighters in large concentrated groups. The Shiva was constructed to conduct such trials. Using a leftover Ajax prototype hull, multiple external cranes were fitted, capable of launching and retrieving fighters. Each crane could hold a maximum of 3 fighters. Images from the trials showed upwards of 50 fighters attached to the ship.

After 1 year and 4 months of trials yielded better than expected results, the decision was made to go ahead with construction of carriers capable of operating 100 fighters.

Afterwards, the Shiva remained as a training carrier in the Heinessen Technical School. However after large ship losses in the Battle of Amritsar, the Shiva was sent to the front lines.

Much of the ship's available space was filled with crane equipment, communications equipment, and fighter operation equipment. All this increased the total mass of the ship and decreased its mobility.

To deter enemy ships from approaching during the vulnerable period of fighter launch or recovery, the Shiva was equipped with 80 cruiser calibre beam cannons. Due to power limitations, the guns' effective range was short, but their density and weight of fire made it difficult for any enemy to withstand. (Fleet File Collection Vol.10)
