History
Vice Admiral Hauser von Steiermark participated in the Second Battle of Tiamat, under the command of Fleet Admiral Zieten. Hauser was very critical of Zieten's decision to allow Vice Admiral Wilhelm von Mückenberger to participate in the battle, because Hauser did not think the battle should be fought to avenge the recent death of Mückenberger's uncle, Fleet Admiral Keltring. Personal sentiments such as that, Steiermark felt, interfered with and clouded the true purpose of the battle: the defeat and subjugation of the Free Planets Alliance.
Steiermark was arguably the most competent and certainly the most successful admiral on the Imperial side during the Second Battle of Tiamat but was unable to prevent the battle from turning into a major Imperial defeat. As the Alliance's forces finally shattered and routed the Imperial forces, Steiermark's fleet remained and served as a solid rear guard, covering the retreat of the remaining Imperial forces. He then sent a message of condolence to the Alliance regarding Bruce Ashbey's death, an act which was condemned by the admiralty but it did not slow his advancement because of his obvious competence. Seven years after the battle, when he was questioned during the investigation of the death of Christopf von Michaelsen, he was observed to be holding the rank of a full admiral. (SL: 'The Journey in Search of the Exit', TBT: 'Part Two')
By the Third Battle of Tiamat, Steiermark was presumably long dead, but his actions following Second Tiamat were recalled by Reinhard von Musel. Although Musel found that Steiermark's actions of expressing sympathy for the enemy were a bit reckless at the time (and Reinhard declined to do the same after the Third Battle of Tiamat), he agreed with the sentiment and presumably viewed Steiermark as a competent, honourable commander.
