Military service

Commodore Mecklinger as Reinhard's chief of staff (795 UC (486 IC / 3595 CE))

By the Fourth Battle of Tiamat, in 795 UC (486 IC / 3595 CE), Mecklinger held the rank of commodore, serving as Admiral Reinhard von Musel's chief of staff during the battle. (My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars)

The Imperial High Command had briefly removed Mecklinger and some of Reinhard's other subordinates from their posts in the Müsel Fleet for the Battle of Astarte, instead replacing him and the others with commanders that Reinhard had not worked with before. Mecklinger, along with Reinhard's squadron commanders, Oskar von Reuenthal and Wolfgang Mittermeyer, spent the battle back at Iserlohn Fortress, where they speculated about the blond admiral's mission and the background of his temporary subordinates, as Mecklinger played a piano. (Overture to a New War)

Following Reinhard's promotion to Fleet Admiral, Mecklinger himself was also promoted and became part of the Lohengramm admiralty. During the attempted Free Planets Alliance invasion of the Empire in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE), Mecklinger's fleet took part in battle against Vice Admiral Appleton and the 8th Fleet at the Battle of Wansteidt. It was an Imperial victory, where Mecklinger inflicted 30% casualties on the Alliance and forced the 8th Fleet to retreat. He later took part in the Battle of Amritsar, which saw the defeat and retreat of the remaining Alliance forces in Imperial territory. (LOGH: 'The Castrop Rebellion', 'The Battle of Amritsar Starzone')

Under the command of Fleet Admiral Reinhard von Lohengramm, he later took part in the Imperial Civil War of 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE), in the final battle out side of Geiersburg Fortress against the Lippstadt League fleet. (LOGH: 'The Lippstadt Conspiracy', 'Courage and Loyalty')

After the Eighth Battle of Iserlohn, he was given the unhappy task of notifying Kempff's widow and children that he had been killed in battle.

He took part in a conference of Lohengramm's admirals following the abduction of Kaiser Erwin Josef II in 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE) by a couple of former Lippstadt veterans. When it was revealed that the kidnappers took him to the Alliance, where they established a Goldenbaum government-in-exile, Lohengramm declared his intention to invade the Alliance. However, Mecklinger was appointed as the commander of the rear line forces and thus remained on Odin during Operation Ragnarök. (LOGH: 'The Abduction of the Young Emperor', 'Invitation to a Requiem')

In 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE), Mecklinger discussed security arrangements in the Imperial homeland with the only two other admirals left on Odin, Ulrich Kesler and August Samuel Wahlen. He took part in an operation against Yang Wen-li and his followers at Iserlohn Fortress later that year by blocking the Imperial end of the Iserlohn Corridor. However, Yang tricked him into withdrawing out of the Corridor by sending his whole fleet at the Mecklinger Fleet, which was outnumbered. (LOGH: 'Eve of the Festival', 'The Battle of the Corridor: The Invincible and the Undefeated')

During the Reuenthal Rebellion, Mecklinger was granted passage through the Iserlohn Corridor by the Iserlohn Republic government to enter former Alliance space, in order to suppress Oskar von Reuenthal's revolt. He however did not directly participate in the hostilities; instead he reopened investigations over the attempted regicide of Reinhard von Lohengramm on Uruvasi and uncovered Terraist involvement in the attempt. (LOGH: 'Die by the Sword')

In 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE), Mecklinger took part in the final battle against the Iserlohn Forces, being present aboard the supreme flagship Brünhild. (LOGH: 'The Crimson Star Road')

On his death bed, Reinhard recommended to Hildegard von Lohengramm that Mecklinger be promoted to Fleet Admiral.

Personal life

Mecklinger is known for his fondness of the arts and history and was a noted scholar.

He had won prizes in both prose poetry and watercolor in the annual Imperial Academy of Art's competition. His piano playing was lauded as "a perfect fusion of daring and delicacy".

He later wrote a series of essays evaluating the various Admirals and Commanders of his time. Among other things he concluded that Reinhard was the overall best commander and Yang Wen-li being more of a strategist than a fighter. He also criticized Bittenfeld's actions during a fire at Reinhard's temporary residence, in which Bittenfeld rescued Reinhard but did not rescue countless historically valuable works of art. (LOGH: 'Lost Things')

It was also noted that Mecklinger was the one who most enjoyed Reinhard's attempts to embrace the performing arts and other such things outside of war.
