History
Early life and civil war
The Landsberg family had been a prominent noble family that went back at least five generations. They had enjoyed the opportunities that nobility presented them. Alfred's great grandfather had survived to become a centenarian and had lived a life of feasting, hunting, and womanizing until his dying day.
His family had helped construct secret tunnels under Neue Sanssouci that could be used to rescue the Kaiser if need be. Reinhard von Lohengramm had seen Alfred von Landsberg at the palace many times. The Count was known for being a romantic and enjoyed writing poetry. (LOGH: 'The Abduction of the Young Emperor')
During the Imperial Civil War of 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE), Alfred von Landsberg sided with the Lippstadt League, holding the rank of rear admiral. He supported Admiral Staaden's plan to invade Odin and rescue the young Kaiser while Reinhard von Lohengramm's fleet was focusing on fighting the Lippstadt Allied Forces in other sectors, although Landsberg himself did not participate in the battle. Following the defeat of the Lippstadt forces by Lohengramm, the Count had managed to retreat just in the nick of time and left the Empire for exile on Fezzan, where he sold a set of star sapphire cuff links (a present from Friedrich IV) and spent his time applying his talent for poetry and short stories to composing a volume called "A History of the Lippstadt War". The work was rejected by a publisher as being too inaccurate, subjective, and setting an inappropriate romantic tone for a history. It was this rejection which served as a call to action on his part. Abduction of the young emperor
In March 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE), Landsberg was contacted by Rupert Kesserling, assistant of the Landesherr of Fezzan, Adrian Rubinsky, asking him to get involved in a plan regarding the Empire. The count later met with Captain Leopold Schumacher, another former Lippstadt veteran, and learned of the plan to kidnap the child emperor, Erwin Josef II, and smuggle him into the Alliance. Unbeknownst to them, they were being used in a plot by the Fezzanis to keep the war between the Alliance and the Empire by giving Reinhard von Lohengramm a reason to invade. Landsberg and Schumacher agreed to go along with the scheme, departing Fezzan together for Odin a few months later, using fake passports. (LOGH: 'Lost Things', 'Determination and Ambition')
Upon arriving on the Imperial capital, their presence did not go unnoticed. Lohengramm was informed of their arrival by Ulrich Kesler, the Military Police chief, but decided to let them carry out their plot so that he could have an excuse to attack the Alliance. Landsberg and Schumacher waited in a hotel as they planned out their kidnapping and made arrangements with Nicholas Boltik, the Fezzani high commissioner on Odin. While the former captain suspected that the Fezzanis had ulterior motives, Landsberg had full trust in them and asked Boltik's secretary Glazunov to pass his thanks to the high commissioner. Landsberg told Schumacher his plan for getting them into Neue Sanssouci using the old tunnel system that existed beneath the palace, as it was originally built by the Landsberg family years ago on a kaiser's orders. He said that his role in the "noble mission" was decided generations ago. (LOGH: 'Thunder', 'The Abduction of the Young Emperor')
In July 798 UC (489 IC / 3598 CE), Schumacher and Landsberg entered the kaiser's palace using the underground tunnel system. Landsberg guided him through the palace to the kaiser's room, having been received there many times in the past, where they took the child with them and fled. They departed Odin aboard the Fezzani ship Rocinante after using the same tunnels to leave the palace, fleeing to the Alliance. (LOGH: 'The Abduction of the Young Emperor')
Later life
After arriving on Heinessen, Landsberg, Schumacher, and Erwin Josef met with Jochen von Remscheid, another noble who agreed to take part in the plan, and formed a Goldenbaum government-in-exile. Its existence was announced in a special broadcast from Heinessen by Remscheid and Supreme Council Chairman Job Trunicht. Lohengramm declared war on the Alliance not long after the announcement. In the legitimate government, Count Landsberg continued to care for the kaiser, and was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral. (LOGH: 'The Arrow Is Released', 'The Cold Spell Arrives')
The Alliance fell to Lohengramm and the Empire during Operation Ragnarok in 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE). When the legitimate government was disbanded, Landsberg fled and disappeared, along with Erwin Josef and Schumacher. He later went insane and was eventually found by the military police in 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE), along with a dead body believed to be the kaiser's. Landsberg claimed that the child starved to death, but when Schumacher was later captured he revealed that it was not true. Landsberg lost custody of Erwin Josef around March 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE) and his whereabouts after that were unknown. The dead body had been taken from a morgue by the now insane Landsberg. (LOGH: 'Running Start Towards the Future', 'Dream: To See It to the End')
