The Asgrimm (Japanese: アースグリム) was the Imperial flagship of High Admiral Adalbert von Fahrenheit.
Contents[hide] |
Service history
The Asgrimm was provided to Admiral Fahrenheit as his flagship following the defeat of the Lippstadt League. Its first campaign was Operation Ragnarok. At the Battle of Rantemario, the Asgrimm was caught in an energy current whilst trying to get behind the Alliance fleet, and focused on long range bombardment for the remainder of the battle. (LOGH: 'Seeking a Free Universe', 'The Two-Headed Snake: The Battle of Rantemario')
Following the start of the Second Alliance–Imperial War, the Asgrimm fought at the Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone, and the Battle of the Corridor. At the Battle of the Corridor, the Asgrimm and its powerful main weapon proved instrumental in ensuring the escape of the Black Lancers and the Fahrenheit Fleet from encirclement and annihilation at the hands of Yang Wen-li. In the process of supporting the fleet's retreat, the ship was destroyed, and High Admiral Fahrenheit killed, at 23:25 on 29 April 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE).(LOGH: 'The Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone (Part One)', 'The Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone (Part Two)', 'The Battle of the Corridor: The Invincible and the Undefeated')
Design
In addition to its armament of cannons and missiles, the Asgrimm was armed with a heavy, double-barrelled beam weapon concealed in its prow. The firing sequence and characteristics of the beam closely resemble the Thor Hammer and Vulture's Claw. This heavy weapon was capable of wide destructive effects. Further, its firing also damaged the Asgrimm itself, to the point of melting part of its prow. (LOGH: 'The Battle of the Corridor: The Invincible and the Undefeated')

The Asgrimm mounted 8 main cannons. The 8 mounted on the upper hull were medium range while the 4 mounted on the lower hull were long range. The special weapon system consisted of two large calibre guns in recessed mounts with an output comparable to a small fortress gun. The energy drain of this system was so large it was only ever used in an emergency. If the safety systems that prevented excessive energy flow from damaging the system were overridden from the bridge then the firepower of this system was unmatched by an Imperial ship.
There were auxiliary engines on both sides of the hull and these were powered by a new reactor designed. The overall thrust output of these engines matched that of a standard Imperial battleship and gave the Asgrimm high mobility. At the front of these auxiliary engines were air intakes. As standard for Imperial ships, these were for use in atmosphere, with the air being heated by heat exchanges before being expelled for thrust.
Long antennas for FTL communications extended above and below the hull.
Due to the increasing proliferation of small attack craft, the Asgrimm carried 12 Walküre fighters in the rear lower hull for close range defense or attack.
Fahrenheit was posthumously promoted to fleet admiral and awarded the Kircheis Medal. (Fleet File Collection Vol.1R)
Background information
The name Asgrimm is probably a reference to the character 'Asgrim' in the Icelandic Njáls saga.
Apocrypha
LaserDisc/DVD appearance differences
The Asgrimm appears briefly in the LaserDisc version of 'Farewell, Distant Memories', in the scene showing several of Reinhard's admirals (including Fahrenheit) leaving Geiersburg Fortress for Odin. The ship was removed from later releases of this episode, presumably because its appearance constituted a continuity error.
Fleet File Collection
The Asgrimm is included as a model (with both Goldenbaum and Goldenlöwe markings) in Fleet File Collection Vol.1 and Fleet File Collection Vol.1R.
