Service history
Alliance–Imperial War
The Salamander's first campaign was the counterattack against the Free Planets Alliance's invasion of Imperial space in 796 UC (487 IC / 3596 CE), defeating the 3rd Fleet at Planet Lesing before meeting up with the Kircheis Fleet and Lutz Fleet in the Battle of Amritsar. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Amritsar Starzone').
Imperial Civil War
In 797 UC (488 IC / 3597 CE) the Salamander fought the first fleet action of the Imperial Civil War, commanding a blockade of Odin to capture the high nobles fleeing the planet. The Salamander then led the Wahlen Fleet as part of the fleet of High Admiral Siegfried Kircheis, again alongside the Lutz Fleet. (LOGH: 'The Lippstadt Conspiracy', 'Courage and Loyalty')
Invasion of the Alliance
Following the takeover of Fezzan, the Salamander fought at the Battle of Rantemario in 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), leading an attempt to split the Alliance Fleet's right wing and battling the 14th Fleet. (LOGH: 'The Two-Headed Snake: The Battle of Rantemario')
Subjugation of Terra
The Salamander's most historic action was probably the Imperial assault on Earth against the Terraist Church in mid 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE). The flagship itself was piloted through the Himalayan Ranage to land troops in the Terraist Church's headquarters in a bunker in Mount Kangchenjunga, with the attack culminating in the complete destruction of the Terraist Church's headquarters. (LOGH: 'Holy Land')
Reuenthal's Rebellion and the Eleventh Battle of Iserlohn
The Salamander did not see active combat again until the Second Battle of Rantemario in late 800 UC (2 NIC / 491 IC / 3600 CE), fighting under the overall command of Fleet Admiral Wolfgang Mittermeyer against the rebelling forces of Fleet Admiral Oskar von Reuenthal. In the course of the battle, the Salamander suffered two direct hits (including to one of its Walküre hangars) - with High Admiral Wahlen himself losing his cybernetic left arm from shrapnel thrown off by a secondary explosion on the bridge. The damage to the ship's outer hull was repaired during the course of the battle, and the flagship remained on the front line. (LOGH: 'Live by the Sword...')
Following the end of the rebellion, the Salamander was based on Heinessen, and would narrowly avoid being destroyed by the Thor Hammer at the Eleventh Battle of Iserlohn in 801 UC (3 NIC / 492 IC / 3601 CE). Due to the damage suffered by the rest of the fleet, neither the Wahlen Fleet nor the Salamander participated in the Battle of Shiva. (LOGH: 'A Challenge to Arms', 'The Beautiful Maiden Wants Blood')
Design
The Salamander resembles the Skirnir and Forseti in general construction. The ship's most distinctive feature is a pair of claws on its ventral hull, used to secure the ship to terrain during landing operations. These claws were used in the Wahlen Fleet's assault against Terra, with the Salamander deploying ionocraft mounted armoured troops into the Terraist Church's headquarters. (LOGH: 'Holy Land')
