Service history

The very first warship to be commissioned after the foundation of the Goldenlöwe Dynasty, the Perceval was granted to Neidhart Müller by Kaiser Reinhard von Lohengramm on his elevation to the rank of High Admiral in 799 UC (1 NIC / 490 IC / 3599 CE), as a reward for his distinguished service at the Battle of Vermilion, where he saved Lohengramm's life (and his flagship Lübeck was destroyed). (LOGH: 'The Battle of Vermilion (Part Two)', LOGH: 'Visitors')

Though High Admiral Müller feared he might not ever get a chance to sortie in his "excellent" new flagship, the Perceval would fight at the Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone, the Battle of the Corridor, and the Battle of Shiva. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone (Part One)', 'The Battle of the Corridor: End of the Campaign', 'The Crimson Star Road')

Design

A symbol of Kaiser Lohengramm's new empire, the Perceval inherited the gleaming-white hull and flowing form of the Brünhild. The Perceval's armor, like that of the Brünhild, was capable of deflecting cannon fire without damage. (LOGH: 'The Battle of Marr-Adetta Starzone (Part One)')

Ship design within the Empire had been largely stagnant for nearly 50 years, with the standard battleship having been in mass production for decades. Ironically it was the fall of Iserlohn Fortress to the Alliance that triggered an end to this stagnation as it created a sense of crisis within the Empire. In designing this ship, designers were aiming for a standard Imperial flagship design for the next 100 years. Incorporating many of the design principles and technologies first implemented by the Brünhild, the Perceval can be seen as the herald of the next generation of Imperial flagships.

The shape of the hull utilised curved armour plating for increased defence and ability to deflect beam cannon hits. The exact hull coating of the Brünhild was not used due to the cost, but a similar coating, based on the same technology, was used, giving the Perceval a light grey appearance under the light of a G spectral class star.

Like Brünhild, the Perceval mounted its beam cannons in recessed mounts, and its wedge shaped hull allowed it to concentrate firepower to the front.

The most revolutionary technology on board the Perceval was the set of high performance main thrusters that achieved the same performance as older thrusters in half the volume. New technology allowed for greater propellant acceleration. During testing, it was recorded that propellant was expelled at 68% of the speed of light. The direction of this expelled propellant could be vectored using magnetic fields allowing the ship to rotate quickly along its axis. Two sets of heat resistant vanes for thrust vectoring were located, one to each side of the centre of the rear hull.

For movement within atmospheres, older ships had mounted air intakes and heat exchangers, relying on expelling the heated air to generate thrust. The Perceval did not need to mount such a system, and instead could use its main thrusters for both movement in space and atmosphere. For atmospheric movement, the reactor could shift quickly to an extremely low output state instead of its normal high output state for space travel and combat. A larger mass of propellant would be heated and expelled, but at a lower velocity, suitable for atmospheric travel. (Fleet File Collection Vol.3)

Background information

The name Perceval is probably a reference to Parzival, the hero of the German medieval romance of the same name.

DVD features

One production sketch of the ship and two sketches of the bridge appear in the extra features of the DVD box set.

Fleet File Collection

The Perceval is included as a model in Fleet File Collection Vol.3. In a 'Reader Memo', it is mentioned that the design was intended to resemble a paper airplane.
